We are catching the morning (9:30) Newhaven Dieppe ferry and then heading down to near Domme in the Dordogne. Ferry docks at 2:30 French time which would mean hitting Paris at rush hour if we take that route as suggested by Via Michelin. So am looking at avoiding Paris using the following route:
Dieppe - Rouen - Le Mans (overnight camp at Le Chateau de Chanteloup)
then:
Tours - Poitiers - Limoge - Brives - Domme
Has anyone else tried this route and, if so, how did it go? Have a tent and not towing so should be able to make decent progress on clear roads.

Sorry can't help with the route, although there are a few choices without ending up on the Boulevard Peripherique at Paris, Newhaven - Dieppe would definaley be my crossing of choice for heading to the South, the crossing takes half the time it used to back in the day, as they use the fastcat type ships I am told, making it a 4 hours crossing I guess, it's just the cost that puts me of, around £200 for car+trailer, compared to the Dover crossing of £58 unfortunatley a no brainer for now.
Go via Rouen no question. It was a good route even before the A28 motorway was opened recently . Alternative is the well trodden route Rouen - Evreux - Dreux Chartres Orleans Limoges
Agree with the above, we however go Chartres Blois (N10,D924) then D765, D2076 to Vierzon then A20 down to Brive. It is very quiet and fast on this route and avoids peage!

Hi - we are planning to do this drive next week and wondered if anyone can recommend a family friendly campsite for an overnight stay on route, possibly about 4 or 5 hours on from Dieppe?
Camping de Sologne at Salbris, between Orleans and Vierzon - kids can feed the coypu in the lake! Walking distance to the village, around the lake, with plenty of pizza places/bars/restaurants. Just a bit further up the road is a supermarket. The site is off the autoroute, but easy to get to.
Camping des Alicourts, at Pierrefitt sur Sauldre is similar area, more all-singing site, and more expensive, bit further from the main route.
Further south municipal sites at Vierzon, and a bit further still Camping Rouelle des Loups, at Vatan (we got there from Abbeville last year) - so perhaps that will be OK. Small site, near a lake, children's play area nearby, municipal swimming pool adjacent, and a walk into the village. Just off the A20, with entry/exits to the autoroute (free) from both north and south of the village.
Agree with SG ... to Blois, then get onto the A20 asap ... as it's not a toll motorway. For me the best route after Blois is on the D956, which takes you straight to the A20

Isn't that a long way around? According to Viamichelin it costs the same in tolls from Orleans to Blois as it does from Orleans to Vierzon on the A71. Viamichelin states the route from Orleans to Vierzon will take 1 hour 40 minutes, where going via Blois takes 1 hour 54.
You can cut out the toll section from Orleans to Vierzon by using the old N20 which runs alongside the autoroute. Despite going through three or four little 'towns' this is a good quick road, and costs nothing.
Dieppe - Rouen - Evreux - Chartes - Vendome - Blois - D 956 to A 20 is a more direct route than going over to Orleans, then back westwards to collect the A 20 .. n'est ce pas?
Your route would be Dieppe, Rouen, Everuex, Chartres, Orleans, Vierzon, Limoges, Brive, & off A20 at J55 toward Sarlat. Mostly dual carriageway & not too much toll.
By the time you have got going you won't have that much time so stop at Chartres camping municipal(google for directions)& you will have resonable drive if you start sharpish next morn.
