We are thiking about going to Spain during winter months . We hear about people going to camp sites in winter but we dont know which are good .Can anyone tell me what experience they have had of camping in winter on Costa Del Sol etc Whats the weather like and what are the campsites like. Any help would be appreciated . Whats the best route?

dont foret the deep snow on the hills behind benidorm. nice for looking at. was not too nice there just before xmas last winter.the majority just free camp all over ther med.chase the sun . why stay in one place . benidorm is ok if you like all day english breakfasts and bingo. cheers alan.
We have wintered in Spain and agree with vwalan - try different locations. We thought Benidorm was hideous, but each to his own. We stayed in Oliva in Costa del Azahar, in Valencia, and had some really bad weather, including gale-force winds, but then by English standards the temperature was mild, and there is some lovely scenery. Further south we stayed at Cuevas Mar campsite, not far from Mojacar. The weather was better than in Valencia and the region has some lovely scenery, and some really interesting places to visit, including the film sets where they made the so-called Spaghetti Westerns with Clint Eastwood! The campsite was fine, quite a lot of Brits there but other nationalities too. From there we headed inland to Orgiva. Lots of snow on the Sierra Nevada but it was mild in the valley, and Granada was an easy day trip. Then we went to a site near Marbella, La Bouganvila. The weather was mostly warm with a bit of rain. Again lots of interesting places to see in the area, such as Ronda. From there we went south to Tarifa, which is known as the wind-surfing capital of Europe for a good reason - sunny but very windy! Another good site was Camping La Aldea at El Rocio, uniquely Spanish. At most campsites there are discounts for long stays but we found an ACSI card invaluable for saving money on shorter stays. If you're going for a long period it seems such a shame to limit yourself to one place. Spain is a large and fascinating country and offers so much more than tower-block hotels and fish and chips!

Hi alan ,I have never played bingo ,I prefer to play petanque every other day,with the Dutch and German campers
You forgot to mention free camping or wild camping is only
available if you have a Motorhome!
and there are more Spanish people live and work in Benidorm than any other resort in Spain!

Bad news; = The best campsites in Spain are north of Valencia!
Good news; = The best winter weather is south of Valencia
There are good campsites in and around Benidorm .
Further south to Andalusia/Costa Del Sol nobody has found a really good site yet
We have come to the conclusion, "wintering in Spain" is best done in Benidorm.
Benidorm in winter ,is full of like minded wrinklies like us ,and not a lager lout in sight!
Winter weather is ,
on a weekly basis;
3 days gorgeous,
2 days OK ,
2 days rain
Venture into the old town at night for real Spanish atmosphere ( you may be the only Brit , in a jam-packed bar)
We can eat out three times a week (different restaurant every night)
and a few drinks in the bar each night all for a total of 75 euros !
Sorry but would not agree with all the above points , there are many good sites well south of Valencia , however I would concur the above point about the weather The first year we overwintered in Spain we stayed 60 miles north of Valencia at Alcossebre and the weather was OK but quite cold in January but there was a noticeable change as soon a Febuary came , we then moved onto Calpe where the weather was far warmer .
We have also been down to La Manga , Almeria , Mojacca in january and the weather was pretty good
thats abit like saying more people live in london than cornwall. .its true that benidorm is a big place. as far as free camping . i dont use a motor home i use my mini artic 5er. its just a caravan really . lots use caravans even the spanish . i travel all down the med and can say its all nice really . but do find benidorm a bit like blackpool. my brother usually stays in an apartment over by the big open market .i stay in the road just outside the market never been moved but only stay a few days . keep moving follow the sun, have a good time . good job we all do different things . enjoy your living in spain we do .cheers . keep your eyes open for the truck .we can have a coffee and chat. bye alan.

I like it down by Tarifa. Handy for Gib for the Duty Frees as well. Camping Rio Jara is a pleasant enough place. There's wild camping up by the Roman site of BaeloClaudia and Los Palomas - just watch your belongings...
