I've had an apartment in Spain in January a few times now. The neighbouring apartments are usually unoccupied so there's no one to talk to, the heating in the apartments is usually inadequate so you huddle in a blanket, the bed's aren't always comfortable so you end up with aches and pains ...and you can't take the dog if you fly. It might be better a bit later in the year when it's not quite so cold but I don't think I'll be going in January again unless it's in the van.
