Buy another car - we paid £700 for our galaxy, OK it only lasted 4 months but it still worked out cheaper than hiring! It was too expensive to put through the MOT due to it's age and mileage, this was a week before my partner and I (minus the 4 kids) had booked to go to France. We bought a Renault Clio for £350 and it got us to St Tropez from Leicester. When we were nearly home, the drive shaft went but it was still cheaper than hiring. We now have a Fiat Multipla (Fugly) 6 seater with plenty of space in the boot - paid £1500 for it and it does between 40 and 50 mpg (diesel). Get a good European Breakdown, buy an old bangor and with luck you'll break down and they'll give you a shiny, new courtesy car for the rest of your holidays, sorted!

Last time I hired a car I know I couldn't take it out of the country and I think this is a pretty standard contract.I only realised when I got back from France with it. Mind you the hire Company delivered it to me in the Tunnel outbound terminal carpark when my car expired there. Bit of a clue there really for the hire company. Makes you wonder how car hire in France works at say, Calais, with Belguim just 30K down the road, doesn't it? No border controls either
