We're looking to go to France in Aug 2011, we live 15 mins from Portsmouth. We've been getting prices through the CSMA for ferries from Portsmouth:

Brittany Ferries £595
LD Lines £400

Go Newhaven to Dieppe with LD Lines £273

We've had to go to Dover to Dunkirk with Norfolk Lines, prices vary from £25 a crossing up to £59 depending on the time of day you cross. We've got the whole lot for £120, it'll be a quarter tank of diesel to get to Dover which would be around £20 these days so overall it's cheaper for that 2 hour drive up the coast.

Depends where you're going in France, time of year etc but if you're going in the main holiday season you'll pay through the nose to go from Portsmouth.

We've priced and planned everything for our first trip and it's all booked now.

Good luck with it all, look forward to the reviews.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

The Vendee is the palce for you!!

around 4 hours max i reckon drive, if you want a Brit experience then St Jeans de Monts, though very busy and too British for me! if its a french experience on a family owned site then check out the reviews on Le Ragis on the review pages. If you have young children then you wont be dissapointed, They will love the free donkey/tractor rides and feeding the small animals, (goats, chickens)

ps, the site is a farm still and the owner produces his own wine and sells at the small farm shop (by small i am talking about the number of shelves NOT the floor area LOL) , so how close to a vineyard does your hubby want to be LOL

large supermarkets less than 5 mins away by car and lots of beaches well within 20 mins drive
