Hi,

We are booked on a Norfolk Line ferry that arrives into Dunkirk at 9pm on a Saturday night in May.  We will have already driven for 4 or 5 hrs to get to Dover so towing a caravan and with 2 children in the car we (or should I say my husband doesn't) don't fancy driving much further and just want to park up and get our heads down before driving to Paris Sunday morning. On another post Tentz very kindly suggested that there is a car park at the port we could use.  Do other caravans park there, how easy is it to get in and out of and use and how safe is it?

I have noticed there is a municpal site nearby but it says there is a barrier that closes at 7pm so I have emailed them to see if we could arrive after that?

Any help and advise much appreciated.

thanks

Use the campsite search faciity, and you will find several campsites within the Dunkirk area.I have bee looking at La Lincorne or Camping Parroquet for when we go,but we wil be stopping on our way back for 3-4 days so thinking of Parroquet.Sounds like you have been looking at La Lincorne.

You won't be finding a campsite at 9pm, theres no point in paying for that short a stay. There is easy access to the car park & plenty of room. As I said, go right around first roundabout as if going back into dock & follow 'without tickets', the park is right beside the road behind a fence so you will see it.

Plenty of caravans/motorhomes park there. There is access to toilets in main building. Park is fenced off & within the dock area, about 3 miles from nearest village, so safe enough, I guess.

I agree with everything that Tentz has said, I have been doing it for years and have never had any problems what so ever.

Except of course I think, like me Tentz maybe confusing Dunkerque with Calais, Every year I trundle along to the port at Calais & stop the night there. It only take 30 minutes (22 miles)

That will teach me to read all the posts, before opening my big mouth and putting my foot in it up to the knee. Still no harm done.

No, I am not confusing Dunkirk with Calais. My earlier post relates to the port of Dunkirk(Dunkerque).

Hi tentz, Steve W,
Thanks both for your advise. Looks like we'll be parking at port.
Thankyou

Hi Tentz. Didn't mean to step on your toes.

I only ever arrive at Dunkerque in the dark and it always looks like a waste land.

Perhaps for my benefit, you could tell me exactly how to find the overnight parking and I will look next May when I take the van over. As I am going through belgium and Germany, I would prefer to avoid the extra 40 odd miles going to and from Calais.

Easy.
Go round the first roundabout almost to where you joined it and take the exit signed without tickets.   That will take you to the terminal building with the car park.
Always been plenty of room and some of the old barriers have been removed for easier access.

Enjoy yourself.   Whatever you're doing!!

That's a good idea.   While I had a TT that option was not available but now I will have FC that sounds like a plan!    Howevr, as I will be travelling with dogs for the first time I have not yet ruled out the Eurotunnel.  I do not really want to stress out the anmals although tunnel is more expensive.

If you take your doggies on on Norfolkline they may well be alone in the car for over 2hrs.

Thats OK, Steve, just go as directed & your there. In daylight you can see carpark thru the fences over to left as you come away from boat towards roundabout.
