I would say that it was important to have a letter from the parents saying that you can act on their behalf should she need medical attention, heaven forbid. Just as a safeguard to yourself I think it would be a good idea to have a letter explaning the arrangement.

David

Hello David.

I shall certainly arrange that with her parents.

Thanks again

Andrew.

PS as I can get only 16 days off this summer. We are of to the vendee. Paying an arm and a leg for Portsmouth--St Malo crossing. Staying at Le Pin Parasol 10 km inland, not as hectic as the coastal sites. Its a family run site busy benough until 11 pm for teenagers but quiet later for us old gits

Having been grilled at passport control last year because my name is not the same as my kids I would strongly recommend a good letter from their parents plus giving permission for medical attention. Luckily I carry a copy of their birth certificates with me when I travel. This year I am taking written permission from my husband to travel with the boys.
I don't think it helps that one of my kids is substantially darker than the other mind you - you'd think they'd both inherit the same amount wouldn't you?

Yes make sure you take written permission. We never did and were told off by a frightening looking woman at Calais who said we were lucky that we were allowed to get through passport control on our outward journey. My daughters friend was 13 at the time and was asked a few questions by the lady in question just to check that all was ok.

Hi Andrew

There is an article on it in the Times - but it is behind the paywall

The bit google shows says

23 Nov 2007 ... It just needs to state that you have permission to take the ... To be completely belt and braces about it, you could even get it signed by a solicitor, or other notary. This is also a good habit to get into if children are travelling ... 894646 Registered office: 1 Virginia Street, London, E98 1XY.

Yes you do need it now but we only found out after we had taken our nephew abroad with our youngest son at least 4 times!!!   Lucky we were never challenged either at air or ferry ports.  We had even managed to book him in on holiday in a different name to his passport but still no one checked!  So much for border controls.

Hello,
yes you will need to get written permission.
We took 2 teenagers one 16 and one 15 last year with us, but i think because all the teenagers looked like brothers and sisters we weren't checked.
But our friends had a younger teenage friend of there daughters going with them and they were stopped and checked. They were questioned and they had to ring through to the girls mother to get confirmation it was ok.
I would check with the passport office as they were notified that there was a form that they needed signed by the parent to transport the girl under 18. They were then left to go on there way!!? It was obvious that this child did not look like a family member (no resemblence).
For the teenagers we had with us we had we had written permission for travel and medical permission.
There is a legal precedence but it does depend obviously on who is at customs.
Sueze.

Mind you, when my daughter was about 4 or 5 (she was on both of our passports) but wanted her own so I made a pretend one with photo and front cover. It amazing what you can do with card and crayons .

We had a great time making this and she used to hand it in to passport control all over the place, they joined in the game with gusto. We still have it (kept safe) and it holds lovely memories. Looks like a real one just pailer in colour, but feels the same.

Perhaps I will be able to move into this line of business if the cuts get my job!
