I have a friend who is a transcontinental truck driver he told me that they get through Albania as fast as possible and if there are sheep or goats in the road they don't stop, the bandits drive them onto the road if you stop they rob you,if you resist they are not averse to shooting you.This is mainly in the remote areas,but as he says that applies to most of the country.

The people I come across were nice enough but everything in the country is quite cheap. Life is even cheaper over there.
Interestingly, although I posted in this in error in 2011, my son is now in the Thethi National Park in Albania, walking, and has just sent an email with the most stunning photographs - like something from Lord of the Rings. He's having a great time, friendly people, good food, hot weather, and plenty of walking.

I'll find out about campsites when he gets back - he's doing a mix of camping, hostels, hotels, and staying with friends.

Four euros each per day, nothing for the tent, €2 for the electricity, and Free WiFi. If you stay four days, and have any sort of club card, then the fourth day is free. The toilet block looks fine to me, too!!! He says the restaurant on site is good, too, and the people very friendly. Restaurent prices are amazing - €2.95 for a Margarita pizza, egg, bacon and home-made bread £2.25.
For anyone interested in an up and coming country, take a look at the pictures, read about the site, and take an opportunity to visit what looks like an amazing place before it gets too busy and much more expensive.
That is the sort of place I like to go to. Unspoilt by mass tourism, a bit of an adventure and cheap. Sadly, there are less places like that these days.
First the Caravan Club magazine had an article about going to Albania in its June edition, and now Val A gives it the seal of approval - so it's obviously an up-and-coming destination! It's good to see people becoming more broad-minded and accepting the idea of "the road less travelled."

Our nephew & his wife have just returned from a lengthy overland trip to Greece. They were planning to come back through Albania, said there were plenty of motor homes that did... then the situation changed and they couldn't.
Wouldn't fancy it myself & I'd be having kittens if my son was there, Val! Ah well, we all have a different appetite for risk, I suppose...
