I think I might agree, for teenagers. I think they'll find more to do in the immediate area - and there's beaches nearby, too, if they're into that sort of thing. Lac D'Orient is in a quiet country setting, with a small village in walking distance. However, the city of Troyes does have the largest number of 'designer outlets' anywhere in France (but not cheap as chips, unfortunately!).
We went to Lac d'Orient last year and thoroughly enjoyed it so much we have booked again this year. Have not been to Penboch so cannot comment on that one.
Your 4 year old will love it and I would also think the 14 year olds as they are not old enough yet to go off on their own would also enjoy it. The camp has a good swimminng complex indoor and outdoor. They also arrange entertainment in high season. There is a nice bar and restaurant, also being opposite the lake there are bars, restaurants and many water activities here.
Also being relatively small it feels very safe, unlike the big campsites in the south.
We went in September last year and had brilliant weather. Have booked for June this year so hoping it will be as good.
It was also a very easy journey and took us 4 hours from Calais
Hope this has helped a little Matthew1971

What are the local attractions like, are they far, is there a supermarket nearby? Also is there public transport into Troyes or even Paris for that matter?
We're going tp Lac for 3 weeks Aug/Sept.After reading reviews, and the fact it takes camping cheques sounded just right for us.Also having the lake is great!
Jill, can you swim and use a dinghy in the lake??

I have 3 kids 13 11 7 and we are always happy just puttering on our summer hols. A beach side location is perfect as it gives you something to do away from the camp. Your teens will be happy on either of those locations as the kids just hang out. It's very chilled and safe where ever you camp. I suppose you could decide on cost as Brittany would involve a western crossing?
Just had a good look at both sites on line. I personally would go for penboch. Morbihan area is gorgeous. Beaches are fab. Vannes auray and carnac on your doorstep. If you are camping availability looks very limited you might need to book now.
Hi Matthew - Local attractions are really the lake - there is a small sleepy village Mesnil but dont think much goes on there. Obviously you have the Champagne Trail and all the villages that go with that which are lovely.
Troyes is obviously the biggest town and its lovely. There are two Supermarkets a smallish one not too far called ATAC and a really lovely one on the outskirts of Troyes - Leclerc.
I should think you would be able to get to Paris from Troyes on the train also I think there is public transport from the Lac to Troyes but cant be sure about it.
We never used the restaurant on the campsite as tend to do our own barbeque. Speaking to people who had used it they said it was average. There is also a pizza type restaurant just outside the camp gates which always seemed to be full
Hi Lilyjoy - Yes there is a swimming area on the lake near to the campsite with a beach area, but dont know if I would fancy swimming in it, but thats just my opinion.
Think you would have to make enquiries about taking you own dinghy on the lake as dont know if there are any restrictions. I know they will not allow any motor powered boats, jet skis etc. which must say I am glad about.

As well as the pizza place outside the campsite, (overlooking the lake, lovely for a morning coffee) there's another restaurant within a few hundred metres. When we popped in there was a large party of French people having some sort of celebration meal, they all looked very happy. it looked to be more upmarket but they were still happy for us to stop for coffee.
There's a larger town nearby, Vendeuvre, with shops, restaurants etc and lots of other pretty villages and towns. Bar le Duc was nice, Essoyes was beautiful and none of it was particularly thronged with tourists as Brittany tends to be in summer.
Take a look at the area on google earth to see what you think...in fact compare both, it might help you to decide.
Hi June
We really enjoyed it last year, also the good company. So decided to give it another go this one in June, June.
And yes we are going with Holiday Cheque again in a mobile, it works out at £467 for 14 nights inclusive no extras at all to pay, so we are happy with that, we even asked for the same emplacement,
Thanks to good old Tesco vouchers which we purchased before they changed to 3 our crossing is taken care of
Penboch is a lovely location and was quiet when we were there last year (but it was May!). It filled quite rapidly for the French public holiday weekend just before we left ... so it does seem to be popular with the locals. Even full, it was laid back and quiet at night.
There are indoor and outdoor pools, nice bar, good sized pitches and the sanitation blocks were suberb. Reception staff are extremely helpful (and speak good English).
It is quite a rural site and very close to the beaches of the Golfe de Morbihan. It would be a fair walk to the nearest village though (I drove rather than walked!).
Vannes is a beautiful place and there is more history in southern Brittany than you could shake a stick at! (Penboch is not far from the Carnac area.)
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
