Brittany ferries go from Portsmouth to the ports of Caen, Cherbourg and St. Malo and also from Poole to Cherbourg. You can also sail from Plymouth to Roscoff with them. Unfortunately they are not cheap but depending on where you are heading in france they will save a lot of miles over the cheaper routes from Dover. The cheapest ferry to Caen seems to be the 2.45pm sailing and from Poole the 11am sailing. On all sailings mid week travel will be quieter. How long you stay for is up to you, the return fare will be the same regardless.
If you decide to holiday in Brittany or Normandy you will have very little driving to do from any of the ferry ports mentioned..
