My son flew to Pisa a couple of years ago, with friends and camping equipment, intending to hire a car - but found that between them none had a credit card, and it was absolutely impossible to get car hire with just a debit card - or even a few phone calls back to Mum and Dad to use their credit card as a guarantee. The saga, at the time, is posted on here somewhere.
So, make sure you have a credit card (or a couple, in case one is 'dicky' for any reason). They had to go everywhere by train/public transport, but had a great time anyway!
