Anybody know of a reasonably priced campsite near La Rochelle.  We need it to be fairly quiet, not too large and near to the beach (within 2 miles).  I have a couple of children and would need to have 'things to do' not too far away (within half an hour driving distance from La Rochelle).  Can anybody suggest anywhere please?  Thank you.

La Rochelle is a lovely town, but we've never found good beaches there. There are lovely beaches to the north (around La Tranche) and also to the south (around La Palmyre) - and also out on the islands too (like Oleron). But in that big bay around La Rochelle itself the beaches tend to be very shallow and muddy.  If the children really want nice beaches then I'd stay well to the north or to the south , and save La Rochelle itself for one or two day visits. Now I'll let other people name reasonably priced sites for you - the cheaper ones may be just inland.

We stayed on this site at Lagord, northern outskirts of La Rochelle many years ago for about a week, very popular with the French so we werent overun with other Brits

Its a municipal so reasonable value. It was about 10 mins by car to the sea, and 15 mins into La Rochelle which is a special place to visit, especially at night..

Hi Turners

Yuo should look at Campng les Sables near La Rochelle.I have read mixed revievs here on this site but we have been there three times and will return there again in the future.

Great site with brill pool complex and 5 km from La Rochelle. Also very close to huge Carfour supermarket and 500 meters from beach. Loved our stays there. You should take the water taxi from the Port des Minimes into the center of La Rochelle.VVV cheap and on a good day great fun.I would definetely recomend the site and will return again soon.

Anyone had further experience - nothing in threads or campsite reports. There are two municipals in La Rochelle proper but reading the comments one seems to be expensive (20euros for a 2*) and the other has mixed reviews: quiet and reelaxing or noisy until the early hours..... but the reports are last years, anyone been there more recently.

... or other sites - I'm checking ou the the Lagorf one. .
