hi has anyone taken a tent in hand luggage on a plane and been ok to take it on board,im going to the nova festival in austria my tent is a Coleman rigel 2 man.and is really small,with very thin fibre glass poles. if they would not except it on board ,how much would they charge for 5kg tent to go under the plane.thanks

How much they charge would depend on the airline, think for Easyjet it's something like £23 for both ways.
As for taking it on board, again it does partly depend on the airline. Some have a weight limit on hand luggage, other don't, but there is a size restriction on hand luggage items that I have seen enforced in the past. 2 man tent should fit in the size limit tho, but not necessarily in the bag it comes with. Best bet would be to get in touch with the airline/airport and ask.
the poles might cause a problem, as they could be construed as being capable of being used as a weapon, if they are shock-corded then as a handy garrote. Pegs probably frowned upon as well.
as has been said, check-in luggage charges vary from airline to airline - it is a light tent so you could mail it post restante at your destination
I bought a weekend awning a couple of years ago in the NEC at a show and tried to get it on a Ryanair flight to Dublin.They made me put it in the hold of the plane.Poles,Guy ropes and Pegs were all considered weapons.

Funny how you can buy drink in "duty free" in glass bottles, and take on a plane though! Never had my hand luggage checked for a ball of string, either. Funny how they make it up as they go along.
