Will be heading to the SOF in a couple of weeks. Me and the OH will be sharing the driving, so we are sticking to the toll roads and doing it in a oner (No caravan or trailer). So, can anyone give me an idea how much the service stations are charging for a litre of gazole. Just trying to get a rough idea how much the journey will cost. Is the exchange rate around the €1.08 to the £ ? Happy holidays to anyone who is going soon
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Even if gazole is 1.30 a litre, that makes it the equivalent of £1.18 a litre in the UK - quite a bit cheaper than the £1.41 at our local petrol station at the moment. We shall be filling up before we come home for sure.
Oh, and the Euro is about 1.09 / 1.10 to the £

Does it really matter what the fuel costs? When your down to quarter of a tank or the Distance To Empty is at 50kmh it's time to fill up - plus or minus 20 cents a litre... yes get the cheapest deal (Super-U for me) but you're still going to consume it - most SatNavs will tell you where the nearest filling stations are if you want to go off route - a saving of ten euros a tank versus an extra hour on the road and possibly more toll charges - my time is worth more.
If 10 cents a litre difference will cripple your holiday budget then I'd suggest you're cutting the budget / cloth to fine - or you need to think about getting a more economic car.
Viamichelin.fr will give you the toll costs for a North / South run and an estimate of fuel consumption costs, you will have to tweak the cost of litre though it defaults to 1.30.
And indeed, happy holidays to you - I am six weeks from a solo run to Toulon.

Think you have replied to the wrong link bonny lad. No mention of having to save money anywhere up to now. Just asking fuel prices. Chill out
Just returned from Royan last week Super U diesel was 1.14 other supermarkets were around the same. main petrol stations ie, shell gulf were around the 1.35/1.40 mark. we did;nt use toll-roads so no idea of toll road fuel prices
Filled at at Leclerc supermarket in Saumur on Thursday night. Gazole €1.27 On Friday morning it had gone up to €1.29. Over a week ago in St Gilles Crois de Vie at SuperU it was €1.24 so prices seem to be on the up in France. N roads, Total, Shell etc was about 10cents more.
Here in the UK diesel was the same price yesterday as a fortnight ago.
So France appears to be about 18p per litre less at supermarkets than here
We're certainly conscious of the cost of fuel - not because it would make or break our budget, but just because I don't like paying high prices when there's no need to. Newcomers to France often don't realise just what savings can be made by filling up in supermarkets or similar. In this country you can make a saving of perhaps a couple of pence per litre, or three or four pounds on 60 litres and this is probably what they expect in France - so don't shop around.
On a full tank of fuel (60 litres) we can save around 12 euros. Four tanks full (holiday's fuel useage) and that's over £40.00 - or for us, more than enough for a meal out and a bottle of wine. I know what I'd rather have in exchange for a bit of research before setting off
We use non-toll roads, for the most part, having plenty of time, and it does make sense to shop around before leaving to find where the cheapest fuel is, in areas where you're likely to be stopping. Supermarket fuel is usually the cheapest by far, though the Esso 24hr in Igoville (south of Rouen) competes with the local SuperU on price (and it's easier to get in and out of).
In the Departement of the Herault, where we often holiday, the cheapest fuel at the moment is in Beziers at the Geant Casino, at 1.264 and the most expensive at the Station Dyneff in Montpellier at 1.48. It takes seconds to check on the French Gov. website.

Personally when it all changed from gallons to litres all got a bit confusing for me. I don't even bother checking comparisons or prices anymore and just fill her up, In the end the fuel price isnt going to stop us going on holiday. I suppose it's a case of "what floats yer boat" really, I'm sure savings are to be made but when I'm away I just can't be bothered to make a detour just to get cheaper fuel, I'll just fill her up when the gauge starts to creep below half so most times the tank is full.
