I've read on a ferry forum that there are roadworks in Plymouth that could cause delays/problems on the approach from Exeter A38. We normally leave the A38 at Marsh Mills A374 but we're looking at other routes to avoid the city.
One option is to leave the A38 at Outland road A386, then Milehouse Rd B3396, Devonport Rd, Kings Rd to Stonehouse bridge and then follow the A374 to Union St turning right at Kentucky Chicken island.
The other is to leave the A38 a bit further down at the Devonport turn off to join the A3064, turn left on to Wolseley Rd, then turn right onto B3396 Saltash Rd, turn right onto Park Ave and follow the A374 to the Kentucky island near the port.
Can anyone advise which is the best way or an alternative to the above as we'd prefer to avoid getting stuck in traffic, we'll be towing a van in August...are these routes suitable??
Thanks

Hi what time is your ferry? If early morning or night ferry roadworks shouldn't cause you a problem. If it is the lunchtime ferry I would chose the Outland Road option. I live in Plymouth and there are roadworks springing up all over the place at the moment but outside of rush hours the traffic flows quite freely.
However, immediately after the Plymouth Argyle Football ground (on the left) take the sweeping left into Alma Road (it's still the A386)) and down to Pennycomequick roundabout. Straight across that and up the other side to North Cross roundabout. Turn right into Western Approach and down to bottom where a right turn takes you into Union Street.
All of the above are on big wide roads and are signposted for the ferry.
Have a good trip

The roadworks are moving quite frequently, it may be a good idea to give you post a bump nearer to the time of travel to review where the roadworks are.
Currently I would agree with emmitdb however, they are changing daily :)

We are going out on the 8am ish ferry but plan to arrive sometime during the night....so that shouldn't be a problem. We come back to Plymouth at lunchtime which will be busier. I thought I'd ask on here as I've read a comment about it taking someone over an hour to get through the city, thought it would be wise to have an alternative route. Last time we got off the ferry, town was busy and then every set of lights was against us...it seemed to take forever to get to the A38 so I wondered if we could avoid it altogether.
I've looked at the Alma Rd option and printed a map out so we know how to escape if we get stuck :) Thanks again
I looked at the Devonport A3064 route, I know it's the least direct way in but on google maps it didn't seem to take much longer (5 mins) than coming in down the Embankment and through town. We don't really want to end up on narrow roads with lots of parked cars either, so open to suggestions.

I'll be home from France on the 6th August so will be able to advise you on the roadwork situation then!! They have assured us it will be complete by the summer but not sure which summer. I live in the city and drive and walk through the troubled areas daily.
Thanks Bertie, we'll be leaving on the evening of the 6th - mixed up with my dates! Will probably take a laptop and will be able to check on here while we're away.
This is a real good set of advice folks - thank you. Can I assume that the roadworks are likely to cause small (but not massive) problem for us; as we are travelling next Thursday on the 11pm ferry?
I would allow a little bit extra time but that time of night it won't be too bad. You will need to drive through the town and not go around the barbican/bretonside area, also the main road in from the embankment is being redeveloped.

Thanks Jim, at least I've printed a streetmap this year after reading about the roadworks, normally we just follow the signs that take you right through the centre.
