Just come back from Italy. I think you need to be a bit more specific about what type of site you want, near a town/city, by a beach seaside/lake, mountain areas or on the plains, quite with few facilities/busy with all facilities etc.

You probably also need to be a bit more specific about what you mean by "the north", Italy's a big place, and the motorway charges are very expensive. - We had one journey of about 200 miles - £50.00. In Italy you get charged by the axle, whereas in France you will not get charged for your folding camper as it is under 2m high. Italy has just discovered the roundabout, and they are busy constructing millions of them, our new sat nav did not recognise many. There are millions of motorbikes and scooters weaving in and out, you need eyes everywhere. Therefore travelling on main roads can be slow and tedious.

You might like to check this out The Italian Blog This was our trip a couple of years ago when we visited the lakes and Venice, it might give you a few ideas.
