Going east from Interlaken via Meiringen takes you over the Susten Pass. Caravan Europe says "very scenic and well guarded, easy gradients and turns, heavy traffic at weekends, eastern side easier than west, negotiable by caravans if small/medium size with care, but not for the faint hearted" Height 7297 feet, max gradient 9%.
OK, miss out the Susten Pass ! Go north east towards luzern and along the south side of the lake instead to connect with the motorway leading south to St Gotthard.
But I think you've made the right decision to stay and explore Switzerland

Hi we too are in Interlaken got here today on our way back from Lake Garda, we came via the Susten pass and it was beautiful but you have to take it very slow and roads are very steep, well worth it though. On our way to Garda we went from Luzern along the motorway and once we got near Lake Maggiore it was well signposted from the motorway with plenty of warnings that it was coming up. We went through the Gotthard tunnel both there and back and it was fine, both trips have been good. Enjoy, the weather in Italy has been fantastic too hot at times.
Hi Kaz & Berriow. Thanks for your helpful suggestions we did as suggested went north via Luzern through Gotthard tunnel and south to Maggiore staying near Baveno, weather good today.
Kaz if you are staying in Switzerland we stayed at Camping Stuhlegg which was brilliant east of Interlaken above Spiez overlooking the lake, amazing views and friendly campsite.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
