looking at SP's site plan can the river be accessed from the far end (ie near pitch 171)

Yep, the path leads to the narrow bank from which you can cross to the bottom of the island or walk downstream to teh beach. The 'champs' is now planted with flowers to attract bees, beyond it are walnut trees.
