From what I gather the main french holiday is busiest on the first Saturday of August for two weeks, however next year the first Saturday is the 4th. Does anyone know if this will be the busiest day or will it be the previous Saturday (30th July).
I ask because we are having to go on our main holiday on the first two weeks of August next year and I wanted to avoid the busy roads by travelling a day or two earlier than the main french exodus.

As it's the 4th I would expect that to still be the main weekend for departures but some will inevitably be the week before and a few the week after. Generally speaking I would avoid Friday afternoon and Saturday but I doubt there will be much problem away from the south side of Paris on the main autoroutes.
You need to look Bison Futé closer to the time.
I asked this question several months ago about this year. .
This year the 5th of August was the Black Saturday, we did over 600 miles. we only got caught up the other side of Lyon, 2hrs to do 25 miles. My brother went on the Thursday and also got stuck the other side of Lyon for about the same amount of time.
I think its unlucky if you get stuck for many hrs. just like any busy weekend in this country, Sunday is a great day to travel though in France.

We're going earlier than usual next year and are planning to travel on Monday 6th. Is it still likely to be busy then or will the rush have died down? Also, will we have to book sites? Not sure where we're going yet, so booking at the moment might be a problem, lol!
We always travel on Black Saturday - last year was horrendous but it was the M25 which was the problem and caused us to miss our ferry, but once we were across all was fine. This year we decided to set off much earlier in the morning around 5am and get an earlier lunchtime crossing (tunnel though this year) and we had no problems whatsoever on either side of the channel.

Two words - FORGET IT - did it two years ago - left Paris at 5.30am heading for the Dordogne area. Already in traffic jam by 6.30am got South of Paris by 9.00am and then took us 13 hours to do a journey which should have taken 7. Will avoid first two weeks in August like a plague. June or September for us. But its not a problem for us being retired. Feel really sorry for all of you that have to go in school hols.
