They will probably like the Tintin shop in the centre, a boat trip around the canals, a horse drawn carriage ride & the chocolate shops. Its a bit of a long walk from the campsite but you should be able to park nearer the town centre. Safe cycling if you take bikes. I seem to remember that the campsite hires them out.
The canals, some lovely parks, a horse drawn trip through the streets, and have a look at this website http://www.pandhotel.com/kinderene.htm. We just loved wandering about - and I'm sure they'll be wide-eyed at some of the chocolate shops!
We were there for a few days in December 2010 and loved the city - even though we had eight inches of snow and nearly couldn't get home again.
If you drive in you can park in the station multi-storey, and that includes a 'park and ride' option of a bus into the middle of Bruges and a return trip when you want to get back to the car.
Think there's a chocolate museum. The Belfry is in the centre too, has chimes. I think you can go up the tower.
The canal trip is good, takes you round the sights with a commentry. I believe the carriage ride is dear.
I've only been with adults, so did a lot of shops. Very pretty though.
You will love Brugges, we visited in May last year and had a fabulous time. We also stayed at Camping Memling and thought that it was a great base from which to explore Brugge. We took our bikes and cycled into the centre everyday,-there are plenty of bike racks dotted around to lock your bikes to.
We visited Choco-Story..there is also a Belguim Frites Museum! As already said the Canal trip is good. Oh and the Hot chocolate cafes too!!!!
Julie.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Can anyone suggest somewhere to park when towing, from where we could access the centre? We'd like to spend the afternoon there before boarding the Zeebrugge ferry. We won't have bikes for the whole family with us, so I'm thinking a large park and ride or something?

TT,
Hi, there is a large park and ride next to the railway station, the charge is about 2.50 euros per day which includes a bus into the centre.
I hope this helps,
Julie (standish!)
Yes, that one's fine for solo cars, but not sure about trailers?
(Just checked Streetview and it does have a height restriction, so no caravans and few motorhomes, though I notice there is motorhome parking by the coach park (station?) just to the east, but no facilites apparently for car plus trailer.
We'll go out Dover-Calais and return Zeebrugge-Hull. This gives compromise on cost, and means the holiday ends with a relatively short easy drive for us. We don't enjoy the slog back from Dover to the northwest at the end of our hols, whereas we don't mind it so much southbound because we have the holiday ahead of us. The Zeebrugge sail, being an overnight, saves a stopover, and there is a fuel saving for us too, albeit a smallish one, but still it is indeed more expensive. If we've returned via Hull, as some we've met have put it, 'the washing machine is on by 11am on the day you get home'.
Getting back to my car parking...
I will be towing a 3 metre long trailer, and the tallest part of the outfit is the car (with roofbox) which is 2.2 metres. So looking at the station car park on Google Maps, I'm not sure that's for us.
Just Googling 'Park and ride Brugges' gives "Assebroek Park & Ride Steenbrugge" but I see that seems to have a 2m height limit, which I think will be the case for most park and rides.
We cycled into the centre but i am just looking at the information sheet that we were given on arrival at Camping Memling and with regards to buses it says that you can get the bus no.11 from the bus stop "Ter Lo" which is, according to the leaflet, a 5 minute walk away from the site. These buses run every 20 minutes from 7am-20.20pm daily apart from on a Sunday morning when they are hourly. The bus goes first to the station and then on to the centre. The price is 2 euros. There is also an evening bus from back from Wollerstraat.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
