We are after some advise please! We were hoping to travell from Santander up to calais over a 3 week period in a motorhome the last 3 weeks of August We have got the sights covered for the south west of France (we think!!!!) But as we are a family of 2 adults and 5 children aged between 1 and 10 we are struggling to find any sites in Spain that dont cost a small fortune! Does anyone have any suggestions of sites a couple of hours away from Santander east or north, Ideally CL type, not into the big busy sites.
Thankyou for any ideas
Helen

Are you planning to 'do' the Santander area first (e.g. Santillana del Mar, Soplao Caves, even a quick visit to The Picos)? Or are you heading off east, at once?
Seems to me, if you've bothered to get to Santander, then a week on the north coast is 'de rigeur'?
If going east ... you have to (sorry to sound so didactic!) plan to see the Guggenheim Museum at Bilbao ... my three year old loved parts of it! .... even if you only look at the outside!
If you give me more info ... I might be able to offer some further help.
Favourite sites: Two in Potes .. great access for the Picos de Europa and the Fuente De cable car .... Camping Viorna and La Isla Picos de Europa .... it's a fantastic area ... make sure you do the Cares Gorge walk!
On the coast: Camping Cudillero near the beautifully pictureque fishing village of Cudillero is excellent.
Camping la Hermida, between San Vincente and LLanes is right on a lovely tidal bay (fantastic for kids, with a huge sandy beach ... you can watch from the terrace bar!!)and Camping Las Arenas, just a shade further on has spectacular views.
If you get that far ... Santiago de Compostella is worth every mile you drive and the 'Ria' laden coast of that part is beautiful.
So much to do/see ... Guggenheim, Soplao Caves, Santillana del Mar, Barcena Mayor, Cares Gorge, Fuente De Cable car ... and, and, and ... it's just a superlative area!
Have travelled extensively in Spain ... and this part is still my favourite!
There's a couple of sites I've reviewed.
Have fun!

We visited this site in 2010 and found it to be ideal for us. The site is set in a forest and had a choice of pitches available (full sun, partial or shade). The swimming pool at the site was the best I have seen!
We took time out to visit Pamplona for the day which was not too far and a decent day out. Northern Spain is great and I am sure you will have a great time wherever you stay.
Can't agree more with Kelper!! I know, cos I live in Asturias and am familiar with most of the places Kelper has mentioned, plus a few others.
Price-wise, August is still peak period here and will be the busiest month in any campsite, but there are quite a few good ones...
-El Rosal in San Vicente de la Barquera (Cantabria) 30 mins west of Santander, right next to a long, long sandy beach.
-Los Cantiles, in Luarca (Asturias).. though I haven't been there for years.
-Amaido, in San Tirso de Abres (far eastern end of Asturias, south of Vegadeo), which is usually a fairly quiet campsite, great for little kiddies as they can go and help feed the farm animals etc and can generally play to their heart's content. Very pleasant owners too. In fact, we're going there again (4th or 5th visit..) this weekend!
I can't speak for prices as I don't know what you consider expensive but I would certainly recommend Amaido for the kiddies...

We are thinking of taking our caravan to Northern Spain in June, the sites you mention sound interesting, could you advise me on the size of pitches; our caravan is 7.2m long (shipping length) and 2.28m wide and we will be using a full size awning 2.5m deep. On a number of reviews of sites in Spain they mention the small sizes of pitches, is this the case with most Spanish sites?
I have caravanned on numerous occasions in France, Germany, Austria and twice to Italy but never in Spain and would welcome advice on sites to suit our unit.
Not caravaning but taking a group of 44 students to Noja in June - this will be my third trip with the school I work at. I adore the Cantabria area of Spain, it's stunning. There is a campsite at Noja but I don't know how big it is.
Hi Peter
In our experience, most campsites in Spain have quite a variation in pitch sizes within each site.
Our set up is about 6 meters by 6 meters and then table/chairs/whirlygig, car, bikes, boats etc ..
and we've always found plenty of room.
The best bet is to e-mail the sites you fancy and ask them directly.
I've certainly seen some very big rigs ... including an immense 'two storey' rough terrain conversion (tyres were 2 meters high!) ... at La Isla Picos de Europa in 2010.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
