B]As a result of recent changes to European law all E111 forms issued before 19th August 2004 are no longer valid.

You MUST renew these before travelling abroad in 2005.

Here's the official EHIC Website.

I practically cleared our local Post Office out of application forms this afternoon - one for me, one for my husband, then one for my daughter and another for her husband, not forgetting some for the grandchildren...I seem to remember once being told we were moving towards the paperless society! Whatever happened to that idea?

Mick, it's no longer the case that the one form covers ALL family members.

Hi All, don't forget to take photocopies of each form as if you need to use them and give up the original on the first occasion if you need to use it a 2nd time you won't have one. ( I know what I mean ).

IMPORTANT NOTE :-

This new form is only valid until 31st December 2005, after that you will need the European Health Insurance Card which will be issued by all the Member States. The E111 cannot be used after this date. Bureaucracy gone mad??

Phil.

Hi everyone

Driving to France ourselves this summer but could somebody explain this E 111 form.

I was planning on getting travel insurance through Tesco, does this form eliminate having to pay for this or is it something you have to take with you abroad , legal stuff and all that.

Soon be Easter

all the best Chris8

The E111 basically entitles you to access to health care on the same basis as locals - i.e. it allows access to doctors, pharmacy services and accident and emergency services. You may have to pay up-front for some of these services and reclaim the cost later, depending upon local practice. What it quite definitely is not, is a substitute for proper insurance, which gives you a much higher level of cover, including, for instance, repatriation back to the UK if necessary. So, do get an E111. It will make life simpler and just possibly cheaper if you suffer from some minor illness while you are in Europe. But should you be unfortunate enough to have major medical problems while you are away, your main insurance will still be invaluable.

It is better to prepare for the worst - but hope it will never happen!

So wouldn't you get this with your normal travel insurance?
