Terrible. Sorry! Never again. Putting aside the big corporate issues (nonchalant staff etc.) we had a truly horrible experience - will provide details if you wish but it wasn't nice.

Many thanks for all your advice.  I am glad we hadn't it booked.  Can anyone recommend a Caravan Park in or around the Loire area.  Many thanks.

Im told that Les Alincourts is good but it is big and fairly commercial.

Sorry I disagree with the last poster. We visted Le Gren  and found the experience rather good. Facilities and location are superb. Its a well used Euro tent/camp site so feel free to revel in the fact you paid a lot less than the corporate players if you turn up on the door. And by the way I dont like corporate sites.

Steve,

Thanks a mil for that review.  I really appreciate it.  Maybe we will book it after all.

We stayed there, some time ago now though - so perhaps too long ago to be valid, which is why I didn't post earlier, but we thought it rather nice.  We had a lovely big pitch, the toilet block was heated (end of season) and the bar/restaurant rather atmospheric in an old-fashioned way.  There were lots of friendly ducks who seemed to do the rounds in the mornings - probably living in the 'moat' or whatever.  When we were there (pre any of the UKCS reviews) the pool area was quite new and to us, very swish - but as I say it's a long time ago.  We were in our own caravan and access was easy enough.  I can't say I noticed any particular road or rail noise, but we were younger then and those things didn't bother me as much as they do now!

There were a lot of 'Tour operators' and I'm afraid I don't remember what pitches they used, but we were in an area which was purely tourers.

It's interesting that the older reviews (I think it was family owned when we were there) are generally better than the ones from last year.

Its possible we just had a very bad experience. But, it was so bad its put us off the Castels brand. Lots of things we didn't like and many of them perhaps wouldn't bother others as there is a certain amount of personal preference (bit nanny state for us, shop didn't have much in and was very pricey as was the pizza place) with all these reviews but in our experience the things that couldn't really be about personal preference were;
staff were rude, unkempt and unhelpful
the facilities were very, very dirty

However, it was clear that some people staying there had been there before so I accept that around the end of August it is end of season and maybe this was unusual. I did contact them about the visit actually as it was so bad - no response.

I wouldn't normally be so keen to make a point but it was so bad (for us) that I would express a view to others. Steve, I do appreciate that your experience was clearly very different and I know that some sites we like have had variable reviews so do appreciate that sites can be different at different times. I guess the worst that can happen is that its not nice and you leave - same with any site really?! And maybe it will be fine.

Thanks a mil for all the replies.  To be honest at this stage we haven't decided where we are going to stay.  We just want some sunshine, a caravan park hopefully within 300 miles of Dunkirk and also a holiday that won't break the Bank.
