Do you have a local office of the DVLA? They may be able to start the process quicker than through Swansea? But, if I were you, then I'd get the process started quickly. One tip, when the new one arrives, scan it into your computer, and you'll always have a back up version for such emergencies.
Otherwise, I think I'd just do a more thorough search as it's bound to be somewhere in the house! We find things turn up in the strangest places, but a meticulous and methodical search will usually find anything we've lost.
