I am insured with Churchill, and when i took it out I asked about the "Green Card" and Churchill said it was free so that sounded alright....
I am now thinking of taking my car and caravan to Germany from England so i rang Churchill and they said sure enough the green car is free ..... but it only gives you third party insurance..... hey hang on i have an expensive car third party is no use to me
If I want comprehensive cover whilst i am abroad I must pay another £147.00 !!! For a few weeks abroad it sounds expensive nearly 1/2 a years premium
Does anybody have any idea how I can get around this? Short term insurance possibly?
I shall certainly ask more questions the next time I take out car insurance!! A warning..... be careful
Any suggestions appreciated
pete

A Green Card has always only provided third party cover (see here). If you want comprehensive cover in Europe then it's one of the things that you should ask before you take out cover. That's one of the things that comparison websites leave out!
I'm not sure what else you can do to cover yourself for the period you're away.

Maybe those of us who holiday in Europe should lobby 'the Meerkats' to provide an extra question:
'Do you need comprehensive cover for European travel' (and then) 'If so give outward and return dates of travel'!
That would solve the problem and the quotes would give us what we want!!!!
There are a lot of us about these days, so we should try to change 'the system'!
Totally agree. Just been there myself renewing car insurance. My understanding is that a lot of EU cover included is " road traffic act " only, whatever that is, but you can bet it is even less than third party.
And whilst we are on the subject , why do I need extra protection for " legal expenses " when I have fully comp?
Will this be the next Mis-selling debacle, and will we all be able to claim of the insurance companies?

If you go for the cheapest premium then usually you will get the least cover.
Continental motorists pay a lot more for their cover than we do and the extra premium for continental cover reflects this extra risk.
Incidentally, since the advent of the EU you do not need to carry a 'Green Card' as such, merely ensure that the geographical limits shown in your policy include Europe. Your existing Certicate of Insurance will provide evidence of the existance of the minimum insurance requirements for whichever european country you are in and must be carried with you.
Just back from Agde. My insure issued me with a grren card. But in order to maintain the level of cover I have in UK I had to pay more. £58.00. Was away for a month.
I get 80 days full comp insurance a year, just have to make a phone call with the dates and I am covered. been with the same company now for 10 years, they are no more expensive than any of the others on like for like cover.
We've just cancelled with ESure for the exact same reason. At Easter we had to pay £49 for the week extra to get the Green Card. Not had to have a Green Card since 1990! every insurance company before has done it for free, just had to let them know, and take the insurance policy document.
Anyway going away for three weeks in August, and they wanted silly money again, so cancelled it. Had to pay cancellation cost of £55, but now with Swinton, and we get 90 days free Euro cover, which is more than enough. When we come to renew in a years time, it will be certainly something I check into first before signing on with another insurer... total con :-)

I`m sure that LV=Liverpool Victoria provide cover on your policy with them, (the same as your UK insurance cover), for around 100 and odd days in Europe for a fee of about £20.
Just checked Co-op insurance (CIS) , they do 90 days extended cover for £15 - and UK/Europe breakdown through AXA is £60pa. Not sure if this covers towing or not.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
