We had intended taking the trailer tent to Norway, but just getting there was ridiculously expensive. The toll on the bridge twixt Sweden and Denmark was more than one month's total spend on our recent trip to France. Campsites are few and far between but you can wild camp anywhere more than 50 metres from a road.
We chickened out and decided to take the 12 voyager cruise. It looks good and hope we will come back refreshed before toddling off to camp in Scotland
There is a ferry from Germany to Norway around 255 euro's.

2011 - Turkey, France (Brittany), Finland (Lapland)
2012 - France (Paris), Luxembourg, Belgium (Bruge, Ghent), Germany (Black Forest)
2013 - Scotland (Isle of Mull), Tenerife
2014 - Tenerife, Wales (Abersoch), Scotland
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Personally I would rather drive through Sweden, more to see. You could drive one way, ferry the other way.
The ferry from Newcastle to Bergen was MEGA expensive if you had a caravan, the only saving was in time. We looked at it once and it was about £1200 back in 2005 or so.
The shorter the trip, the higher the daily cost of course. We only do long trips, Norway 2010 was 4 months, so our cost per day is "low".
We are retired now, so time is not an issue.
If you leave out ferries and insurance you are looking at say £25 for a site, £10-£15 for food, and maybe £20 for fuel per day, depending on how far you drive.
Take as much food with you as possible, stock up in Sweden or Denmark, Sweden is the cheaper of the 2.
You idea to wait till you can make a longer trip is good, you will have more time to do Scandinavia justice. Take 3 months and see as much as possible, Denmark, Sweden and Finland are well worth visiting.
Colorline do offer some good deals, depending when you want to travel etc. it can be as little as €60 one way from Hirtshals to Larvik car only.
I suggest you play around with dates and routes (2 out of DK, 1 out of DE) to get an idea of costs.
Whilst the cruise sounds ok, you really don't get the true feeling of the country doing that and Norway really is a wonderful country to visit along with the other Scandinavian countries. But to do Scandinavia justice, requires at least 2 months, preferably longer in my opinion.

The coastal voyage is just that, a voyage & def not a cruise. The crew are all Norwegian as is the menu & with more than 30 ports of call with stops varying from 30mins to several hours, this voyage was more than 'OK'.

Angela,I understand what you are saying, however at the end of the day. You simply can't do the country justice by visiting a number of ports for 15 mins or a even a few hours, especially by doing so in 12 days.
We spent 3 weeks touring Norway in 2009 in a motrohome and found the whole experience wonderful. We travelled via Germany, Denmark and Sweden and this part of the journey was very enjoyable and just as much a part of the holiday as was touring Norway. The roads in Norway are wonderfully scenic especially up through the Fiord land and the coastal highway. The touring involved a lot of ferries which we found very easy and interesting. We certainly didn't have any problems finding camping sites which there appeared to be plenty of and all of good quality. If you do make this journey I would certainly recommend heading to the Lofoten Islands and onto Andenes for the whale-watching which we found to be a particular highlight in a holiday crammed full of highlights.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
