It's worth taking a polarity checker device abroad anyway. Whatever your view on whether it's safe to plug in when live and neutral are reversed, the checker will tell you whether the earth is connected properly, which is arguably more important from a safety point of view.
At a French site last year, I plugged our tester in to one socket and found that live and neutral were reversed, and there was no earth connection.
