Can anyone help or abuse with regards to possibly staying in this area for 2 weeks in August next year. We will have a week in the Vendee first and then travel further down for potentially more guaranteed weather. Having only ever been to he Vendee and Nomandy I really haven't go a clue. We would like to be about 10/15 mins drive from a beach, have a good pool complex and plenty for 5,8,10 and14 year old boys! Rather not have euro camp/ keycamp site though. Also any suggestions of other nearby coastal sites would be good. I have been told that down south would be extremely busy and not good for body boarding, but really I am happy to look at any areas with good bearable weather, ie not ridiculously hot, unless it's bearable!

The climate starts getting worse as you go past Roayn

Note I said climate not weather. Biarritz is closer to the mountains and you are less likely to have sun there than Royan/isle d'Oleron

of course in the weeks you are there the weather could be much better in Biarritz than Royan.

In your other post Berriow mentions the rain in Biarritz - you can look back at August weather records on this website - and see just how many August days have rain: Biarritz weather.

Out of sixteen days in August this year there have been eight days of rain in Biarritz.  Compare that with Agde on the Mediterranean with two days out of sixteen or Aubenas in the Ardeche with four out of sixteen - and I know where I'd be heading.  In August 2011 Aubenas had three days with rain, Biarritz had seventeen days!

Biscarosse, recommended in another post had fourteen days with rain in August 2011.

The south west coast is wet in August, a lot of years.

here's the french climate in pictures

and here is the biblical flood last years july 2011

and 2012 which was 12 times less rain

so much for 'reliability' I think

You need eastern France to maximise reliability IMO

Mmm right. Thank you! So what's Bordeaux like? I really am stuck, as worry the south would be too hot, and having trawled the campsite searchI am struggling, either too busy, or too quiet!

Did you win the lottery?

Biarritz - is mega expensive !

drive another 45 minutes from Biarritz to San Sebastian Espana or beyond

and with your family group you will spend a lot,lot less!

Bourdeaux - 17 days of rain in August 2011, 11 in August 2010, 7 in August 2009, 19 in 2008, 16 in August 2007................!  You can use the same website link to look up other towns/areas.

Montpellier - 4 days in August: 2011, 2 days in 2010, 2 days in 2009, 5 days in 2008 , 5 days in 2007!

One reason why our last half dozen holidays have been spent in the Languedoc area!

Bordeaux is very boring IMO.

The beaches on the Gironde are fab for surfing. World championships at Lacanau at the moment - one hell of a party in town.

but - if it rains the only thing to do is count wet pine trees

and the beaches are probably VERY 'life-guarded' for a reason.

Similar comments apply to Biscarosse - but Camping La Rive is popular - although you could bump into a brit school party

About ten years ago we stayed at Camping Pavillon Royal at Bidart, which is within walking distance of Biarritz. We quite liked the area although as has been suggested the weather is changeable. One day we had hail stones the size of marbles, our then van had tiny dents all over one side!

Hi Nat (It's Mel here, Kaths friend)

We went to Biscarrosse last year and the weather was pants, it was either too hot, or very wet! Nothing nice inbetween. When it rained it really rained (thunder/lightning/floods etc) and when it was hot it was really really hot! Ask Kath to show you the video I put on FB last summer after our pitch got flooded!

The weather vs distance is main reason we aren't going that far south again.

The area was nice and we found lots to do, but I didn't think it was worth the extra fuel and you'll loose a day of your holiday packing up/driving/unpacking.

Thanks Mel, is Biscarrosse near Biarritz then?! I haven't a clue! You should try he Vendee, we love it, in particular the site we stay at, but having been three years on the trot, we have now spent 8 weeks there, so need to see more of France and get a little variety, but I'd course want the good weather that we get in the Vendee elsewhere. Think I am looking around the Royan area now......it's a minefield, such a huge country, and as the site we stay at in the Vendee ticks all our boxes it's quite say going elsewhere, so need to get it right!

How you are well x

Bordeaux is about 285 kilometres, Biscarosse 362 kilometres and Biarritz about 450 kilometres from Le Guyonniere.  Maybe a map would help in deciding just how far and in which direction you want to be heading.

Yes, I have looked at maps, just off my head I haven't a clue where all the different areas in France are that people are mentioning, or their weather and campsites! A little lost outside the Vendee I am afraid, we are happy to travel about 6 hrs ish from the Vendee, further of it warrants it.
