The visa card lanes (with CB symbol) are usually pretty quiet; it's only the cash lane that has the long queues. While the tag is impressive, it's probably overkill just for the annual holiday. Using credit card like this is easy - pop card in and collect it, barrier lifts, pedal to the metal.
I've come to the conclusion it's best to keep French holidays simple, even if it costs a few quid more. Get cash with the usual debit card; use the credit card in supermarkets and restaurants, and just enjoy it all. You're on holiday, so it's likely you'll get the odd rip-off - just smile sweetly and chill!

No stopping, just straight through ... not even judging the pull up to a CC slot (on the passenger side) etc.

As good as the tag ... Well, you'll see the diversity of opinion above. Chaque un son gout.
With a card you have to go through a lane that accepts cards ... there can be queues at some places.
With a tag, it's no stopping, and a reserved 'fast lane' at toll stations ... no finding your card ... no lining up with the passenger window proximity to the card slot etc.
Take your pick.

This works well unless you get behind some 'Wally' who has driven into the Tag lane, without realising, and then other 'Taggers' have followed on thinking they'd get straight through, and the original car has to move them all out of the way to reverse to get into the proper lane! We saw this happen on one of our (very rare) forays on to the autoroute in September.
Or the Frenchman with a tag in the mixed lane, whose tag didn't work for some reason, whilst we, and a number of others, were behind him. Eventually the staff turned up, spent some time playing with the tag, then closed the lane and we all had to reverse out. It's a long way in between those concrete barriers!
