its been a while since I have been on here as other committments meant the motorhome was parked up for much of last year ( what a travesty!).
Anyhow we are getting back in the swing with a trip to The Algarve via the Santander ferry in April/ May.
I,m looking for a one night stopover on route and know that sites in the interior of Spain are a bit thinly spread. Salamanca looks possible but not sure its far enough down to constitute a stop.
Anybody done this route and can offer any suggestions?

There are good places along the northern coast of Spain but, as you say, these may not be as far as you want to go. You might be thinking of somewhere like Porto or north of that - nice mountain countryside, interesting towns but a tendency to rain - some of the time! We liked Coimbra - a new municipal (when we visited) with a good restaurant and a bus connection to the town centre where there's lots of interesting buildings, museums &c..
There are masses of campsites down the western coast but I've not had experience of most of them. It could be a matter of travelling as long as you want and then going to the nearest?
Is that the best route. I must admit I had been looking at the direct slog down past valladoid . Salamanca etc and then cut into Portugal near the South. I guess following the northern coast and then through Portugal would offer more stopover opportunities?
we went to Portugal 2 years ago and went via Salamanca overnight it was a site in the ACSI book and we then went to Nazaire on the coast before heading to the Algarve.We thought Salamanca was far enough for the 1st day.

Yes, on consideration, I can see that taking the direct line could be shorter - sorry! As you mentioned earlier, however, there are far fewer sites in the hills than by the coast ... will be interesting to know what you decide!

The Salamanca, Seville route gives you some great towns/places to visit ... but the dive into Portugal gives you Lisbon and a lot of pretty countryside.
I'd love the longer northern route along the Cantabrian coast ... Santiago de Compostella, Vigo, Porto, Lisbon etc ...
All depends on how much time you have.
we have stopped in salamanca " acsi book" ... caceres with your own toilet block also in "acsi book" then via seville no toll roads great road ...............
Cheers everyone. I think we are going to try Caceres on the way down and Salamance on the way back, get best of both.
Just out of interest what did any of you do about the first night off the boat? We dont get in till 615 so cant decide whether to overnight in Santander ( Cabo Mayor looks OK) or get a few miles under our belt by at least getting to say Burgos on first night. Problem with latter is I guess you are looking at about 9.30pm before getting to Burgos. Any views on this one?
