Hello all after having some great recommendations on here we have found a site near to messanges for our August holiday. The question I have is we normally drive from calais allowing for an overnight stop when travelling to the Dordogne. Would we be better off getting a ferry further down do you think, and is the distance drivable in 2 days from Calais?
Thanks in advance

From Essex you are better off just going to Dover & taking 2 days to get there. Taking 2 days you could save money & avoid most tolls. Your shortest drive would be going Portsmouth to St Malo but much more expensive crossing.
Hi all We go down to the Dordogne most years and use Dover-Dunkirk ferry, but this year we have booked Portsmouth-Caen £233 Car, Caravan + 2 (Caravan Club + 7 Camping Cheques £97) I worked it out that there was only £10 differance with Dunkirk crossing when you look at fuel, tolls and extra nights cost. We are from the north west, you would have to look at your own costs.
You will be able to do Calais to Messanges in 2 days - have done it a couple of times in August towing the caravan.
I tend to take the Rouen, Chartres route and stop ove near Futurescope (Potiers) then travel the second day. I usually stick to the N roads to Bordeaux, travel anti-clockwise around Bordeaux and then pick up the D1010 through to Le Barp and then onto the N10. You should ten miss most of the congestion.

I agree you can get to the Dordogne from calais in two days.
Having said that we've chosen to go Portsmouth Caen rather than Calais, heading for Brantome in the Dordogne then up to Brittany. The ferry was £150 more than the Calais route (its usually more but we booked early) but we're saving eighty odd quid on fuel with the shorter distance.
The added convenience of a more direct route counts for something too, though that's obviously down to personal preference. Some punters (probably most!) are more than comfortable with the extra miles, but if we can shave a chunk off at not too much expense then fine.
