have to agree about the traffic getting on and off the island but once there it all seemed to disappear. We stayed at nearby Marennes and visited the island for the day. We preferred the west coast to the east and although it was August it was very quiet (last week of August) and for us a bit too quiet. It wasnt a great day weather wise which may have clouded our opinion of the island. We wouldnt go back but then we arent really beach people.

We have stayed on the Ile D'Oleron only once but have visited it many times from our regular holiday site just below Royan. The best beaches are on the western side of the island with the Plage de Gatseau, which we discovered on our last visit, being one of the best we've ever been to.Nearby St Trojan d'Oleron is fascinating with lots of sailing activity.La Continiere fishing port is a delightful place where you can spend hours watching the harbour activity. The Les Sables Vigniers beach near St Georges D'Oleron is beautiful and the area around the lighthouse La Phare de Chassiron great for walking and cycling. The rock formations stretching from there down the west coast are amazing at low tide with the fish traps still in use.The port at Le Chateau D'Oleron is also a great place to while away an hour or so and has a popular beach where the kids can go cockelling. As a previous poster suggested however there is so much to do on the "mainland" nearby in Marennes, La Tremblade, the Cote Sauvage and La Palmyra (especially cycling) that if we went again we would stay on the south end of the island. I have an ambition to cycle across the connecting bridge to the island one day but I don't think that "good lady" is too keen.

Fantastic,thank you all.
We are leaving our trailer tent behind this year and are going to try a pre erected tent.We were also going to leave the bikes behind, and rent locally,to save on weight while travelling.
This has been a great means of getting to know what we need about our upcoming trip, thanks everyone that contributed, apart from the traffic,it all looks good!
Roll on July...!!
Which site will you be staying at? Just being nosy!!

Hi Minicamper.
Dont go and ruin it for me now,but its an Indigo campsite called Les Pins D`Olerons near St Trojans les Bains. When I tried to locate it on Google maps,it came up as La Combinette. When I got back on to Indigo,I was told that was what it was called up to last year! I have seen somebody mention it on another thread as La Combinette, and they were full of praise for it,so fingers crossed....we will just have to suck it and see!

We stayed at Indigo Camping last August for two weeks and loved it.
The site is well located for exploring the south of the island by bike, there are excellant beaches nearby. St Trojan is a typical seaside town with the usual amenities
The campsite was well managed and the staff were helpful. The mix of nationalities was French, Dutch, British and a few Germans. Toilets were regularly cleaned.
It was very busy in the middle of August, to be expected, but quiet in the last week. We have school age children so we are compelled to holiday in August.
I mentioned in another post about the island that we had problems with mosies - need to plan ahead with chemicals and maybe a gazebo with net.

Camping la Combinette is across the road from the Indigo campsite unless things have changed since last year.
You can easily cycle into Saint Trojan and to both safe family beaches and the wild Atlantic ones.
There is a lovely train you can catch through the forest to an amazing virtually deserted Atlantic beach.
Wondering if we should be going back rather than further down the Atlantic coast...
