My wife and I (& dog) are planning on venturing over the water to Normandy / Brittany in September this year. We are looking at the Camping Haliotis site - which seems to have excellent reviews, especially the pitches with the private shower rooms.
This is our first time abroad a) with the dog, b) camping and c) driving on the wrong side!!!
Can anyone give us any advice regarding dog friendly areas, places to visit, beaches, etc
Thanks in advance

I can't help with the site, or the area, but driving is fine - after about ten minutes you'll wonder why you were worried. Just remember 'bum in the gutter' as you come out of fuel stations, go around roundabouts, etc., and you'll be on the right side of the road!!
However, it might help to know that Haliotis accepts Camping Cheques (see www.campingcheque.co.uk) which will save you five euros a night over the normal site tariff at that time. If you were going in late August you could save ten euros per night! The Camping Cheque covers a pitch for two adults, car and caravan, awning, and electricity and costs £13.95 per night (or 15 euros for other European Camping Cheque users.) You could probably still have a private bathroom and pay a supplement - we've done that on other Camping Cheque sites, but perhaps someone who's stayed at Haliotis might know more about this.
I put a post on the thread "Mont St Michel", which is a bit further down on the page below at the moment, together with a photo of our tent when we had a private facility pitch. As ValA says you can use campingcheque and pay a supplement which is what we did. When we were there it was only €2 per night extra but I believe it is now $5 per night extra (still worth it though as they are really good).
As you can imagine they are very popular and as they are limited in number (16 or 20 max I think) they get booked up pretty quickly. If you are considering one I would suggest contacting the site as soon as possible to assess availability. As I said in the other post though the general shower block facilities are good anyway.
Cant help with the dog question as we dont have one. Quite a number of French beaches restrict the access for dogs particularly in high season but as you are going out of high season there may be less restrictions, May be a case of "check it out when you get there". I'm sure someone else who has a dog will come along with advice.
As ValA says within a few minutes you will find the driving easy and as French roads tend to be far less crowded, driving can be much more pleasurable.
Hi Hamd23 , I was the poster of the Mont St Michel thread and after the rather fantastic feedback about Halitosis, we have booked 14 nights with a bathroom pitch. Have to say that so far all contact with them has been great and we might see you there !
JANDJSTOTT to save going back to my thread, and to perhaps provide info for the OP here, is the electric at Haliotis just the Pin change adapter , or is it reverse polarity ?

I honestly can't remember what the EHU was but I do think its the standard 3 pin unit. As we have always carried a continental 2 pin converter I tend not to notice these things. I think it is wise for anyone going abroad to buy the converter. Towsure are currently doing them for £3.95 (ebay may be even cheaper) so its not worth the risk of being caught out for that.
For the OP, worth noting that the autoroutes in Brittany are toll free (unlike the rest of France) so visiting places is easy. As mentioned in other posts, Dinan, Dinard, Cancale and St Malo Old Town (within the walls) are well worth visits.
Do you really want to commit yourself now to a fortnight on a campsite in Northern brittany in September? Why not wait till you are about to leave home and see whether they are forecasting an Indian summer or not. If the signs are good then go to Haliotis - you needn't book at that time of year. If Brittany is as wet as we usually find it, then go somewhere south instead. Enjoy yourselves.

Hi Berriow we booked to ensure the premium pitch, guess it cant be any worse than the mud bath we paid for in Cornwall the last two years. After all St Austell and Brittany are only a hundred miles or so apart ! Further south starts to extend the price point with petrol and motorway charges.... we headed down to the Loire a while back and it rained for 3 days almost non stop. So there is no guarantee either way.
No we did not use camping cheques , and booked on the net
interestingly we have just received a picture of the electrical adaptor suggested by Haliotis ..... It is not like the Kampa Europe adaptor in that it has a concave ( female) front with one pin and two holes! The unit I have seen for sale here is the male looking style with two pins. See second pic on my profile for image of adaptor
We spent 3 years in Brittany and Normandy with our dogs before venturing further south. France on the whole is very dog friendly. Not familiar with the site you mention, but can honestly say we experienced no problems and a warm welcome on the numerous campsites we visited over the years. A lot of the campsites didn't charge us for the dogs despite advertised fee. We have also found that most beaches out of season are fine; some have 'interdit' signs which we often found the french gleefully ignoring with their own dogs so then we followed suit! I would imagine this would not be the case in high season though. We tend to stick to lakes and riverside camp sites in the countryside as we prefer the quieter areas. We have walked through towns and villages with them tho; eaten at pavement cafes and restuarants and never shown anything but courtesy and friendliness.

Hello Old Grey. Yes we know about the weather in Cornwall - we live with it ! Plymouth to Roscoff is our nearest crossing so we see North brittany weather close up too. It's the same ! We always say we'll stop in Brittany when we arrive, but never do. But for people crossing to Calais then it's about the same mileage to get down into Burgundy as to head west into Brittany. We prefer premium weather to premium pitches. Hope it all goes well for you.
Hi been to Halitosis 4 times 3 on the private bathrooms its a great site what ever the weather plenty to do in the surrounding area we find that the weather is usually better than uk

Thanks very much for your replies ............. keep them coming, any assistance is much appreciated.
Berriow - I appreciate there are cross conversations in the thread, we are planning only a week away in early September. I'm very keen on visiting Mont St Michel and think we'll just have to take the weather as it comes. After all, who would have thought after the drought summer of 2011, we'd have all the rain and floods of 2012. Roll on summer 2013 - you never know!!
TravellinPam - thanks very much for your response, glad to hear you had no doggy issues. Did you visit many attractions whilst in brittany/normandy - by that i mean Chateau's, Castles, Gardens, etc
Any good walks or national park routes you can suggest?
We like Haliotis, and the area ,we have been 3 or 4 times...with our dog. Some good restaurants 5 mins walk which are dog friendly.Good dog walk from site along riverbank... To Mont SM if you want.Have always used Camping Cheques, mostly large pitches, all full serviced.Staff friendly and helpful. You will probably find that most bars and restaurants welcome dogs, tourist beaches no.
As for the driving Val A is right, after 10 mins you will be a natural.
Definately consider Camping Cheques for the price and flexibility.
Brittany is a curious place for weather. Historically the south east is quite different to the north west in terms of temps and rainfall. The south eastern Brittany coast is influenced by the northern end of the warm atlantique weather fronts, responsible for the disproportionately hot western coast of France. It's a great place for a holiday.
