pricing up next years holiday at the moment, looking at about 150ish for crossing, (2adults, 1 child, car and trailer) add in a couple tanks of petrol and 2/3 overnights stops which is around 200quid (formule 1 are bon marche) and 12 nights for a 4 star pitch with ehu lovely pool etc near la rochelle is just a shade over 400 euro = 340 quid.
so can be done for under 1k easy i would normally spend about the same again on food trips out etc but not particularly good at budgeting once on holiday.
would still come in cheaper than one of those eurocamp rip off things and if you have a look at staying in accommodation probably not a lot in it, a car ferry is less than 100quid i normally go last two weeks in august too, then i think the second week is cheaper as its out of their season.

Food - We have stayed on campsites where a bread van comes round to deliver your fresh
Baguette
fresh bread on sit is a fantastic yet simple thing, they really have kept their artisan roots when it comes too food, never come across a bad bakery, even the supermarkets do superb quality food almost all round, it may cost a little more but its worth paying.
what is interesting to note i always find that if you add a few 'junk food' items to the trolley (crisps, snacks, fizzy crap, sweets etc) the price soon rockets! something the supermarkets here could certainly learn from! fresh fish a proper boulangerie et boucherie at almost every supermarche!
agh been massively distracted from my original point.
fresh bread on site is the norm, on my final SINGLE NIGHT camp during the last holidAy i had to make a swift early getaway in order to make camp on time, and was up at the crack of dawn, when i was delivered fresh croissants, and bread and goats cheese all made by in house on the site absolutely fantastic and wish i could remember the name of the site!

Kids playing
Glass of wine slurping
Bbq smouldering
Pine needles all around
Sounds of others chatting and laughing

Perhaps next time you'll do a site review for the site. That way you wouldn't need to remember!
