Hi all for the last few years we have camped in normandy and it has rained a lot and this year I don't know if I can face putting up a big frame tent in the rain again.i want to go south but the wife wants to go to britany because with the children it's not too far, now what I'm thinking is perhaps a stop en route I can't put big tent up for one night so do the french have atravellodge equivalent if so what are they called so I can look em up.i willbe towing a trailer don't know if that makes a difference thank you

We have used Hotel F1 in the past and found them ideal for an overnight stop.

Hope it helps.

How old are your kids? Do you have a dvd player to help keep them occupied? Have you tried listening to story tapes? The Harry Potter tapes kept my two silent for hours and hours of long drives through France.

I know you said you don't want to put up a big tent for 1 night - but if you stopped at a nice municipal with a river to splash in or a pool it might be worth it to get you to the loire or the dordogne for some sun.

We have stayed in B&B Hotels Chain a few times and found them fine and very reasonable.

Or choose a family run Logis de France, where you might be able to get a family room in a place with a swimming pool for the same as two rooms in a Formule 1 or budget hotel.  Have a look at the Logis de France, or Chambre d'Hotes websites - I'll find the details in a minute.  We've found some lovely ones over the years.

We have always found our children were fine with the long journeys. You need to factor in some stops for them to run around. When on the Autoroute look for the Aires de Repos with the play ground or picnic signs as they tend to be the ones with a bit of space to stretch their legs.

We use a Quechua pop up instead of an awning with our campervan. It's a fantastic bit of kit.

It's peak season so we'd tend to pick a largish municipale and just turn up for an overnighter. Some allow you to book but most in our experience dont.

The municipal at Beaune is great. Arrive mid afternoon and pitch for an overnighter. Walk into Beaune - eat and drink. Clean toilets and restaurant on site.
