website here : http://www.guedelon.fr this is an amazing project... a castle being built by craftsman by traditional methods... highly recommended by French friends..and no one seems to know about it! Its in Burgundy in Yonne a couple of hours outside Paris... well worth a visit.
The Chateau at Ventadour in the Ardeche is also being restored by an eccentric Frenchman. He gets parties of students to help him, and they use traditional methods where possible (and concrete where building regs (Fr) insist. However, it's fascinating, and if you can understand a little French his story telling is second to none. Definitely worth a visit if you're in that area too.
We were the only English on the visit and 'got some stick' because the castle was originally destroyed in the Hundred Year War! However it was all very good humoured.

Another visionary was Monsieur Cheval, the village postman at Hautrives - it's near Lyon - who spent 33 years working single handed in his spare time to build his Ideal Palce. Le palais ideal du facteur Cheval. It won't appeal to Disney fans, but the older generation will find it worth a stop over.

We went last year, it is wonderful. We have recommended it to so many people, and they have come back fascinated by the whole experience.
Disneyland could be anywhere, certainly more to France than that place.
I went with my OH to the opening, were guests of IBM, staying at the Sante Fe.....what a horrible place.
Much rather be at a chateau or in the mountains.
Guedelon is on the must go to in 2015, when we are in the Loire. We like to rotate our visits...this year it's the Alps, then back to Bordeaux in a few years.

Where did you stay Caroline - or anyone else who's been to Guedelon? I'd really like to visit and would prefer a nice quiet site. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
