We are camping in the loire valley for 8 days and would like to extend our holiday by an extra couple of days. Could anyone recommend an area on route back to Cherbourg that is worth stopping off at. After a week of camping we wouldn't mind looking at alternative accommodation.

I always think the Normandy Landing beaches and war graves are really worthy of a day or two. Also bayeux. Lots of lovely little hotels you can stay over in and do some sight seeing.
Depends where in the Loire you are.If you're anywhere Saumur / Tours / Blois / Orleans then I'd agree with the above re: Bayeux & Normandy (stayed in the Novotel in Bayeaux once and enjoyed it).
If you're Nantes / Angers then worth considering St Malo / Dol de Bretagne area including visiting Mont St Michel.
