Hi,
We have booked an early slot for travelling back on Eurotunnel at the end of July and had planned an overnight stop at the municipal site, which I have now found out is closed. Can anyone recommend a site in Calais or very close that would be suitable.
Thanks

hi,we are staying here for ist time in aug,les pommiers des 3pays licques.about 30mins from calais.have sayed at bein assise few times but to dear now,and gandspette but got recommended this site by a friend.lots of sites around though.just goggle sites in calais
I know it's not a Campsite per se but if it's a late arrival and off early in the morning, (either coming or going) you could do worse than the actual arrival 'Sans billet' (without ticket) car park at Calais.
The CRS (Riot) Police have an office overlooking it and there are numerous regular patrols in the area.
Al right, it's not the quietest place at night but we've stayed there umpteen times without a minutes bother.

Or Les Epinettes at Peuplingues!
We have used Les Epinettes a couple of times and agree its worth a look. A couple of days ago we stayed at Les Erables which is just a little further on from Less Epinettes on the same road at Escalles. Admittedly Les Epinettes is a bit more sheltered!
Thanks for the tips. Thats really helpful. We will probably try Fort du Lapin as we usually do our wine shopping in Auchan on the way home.
The others all look worth a look aswell.
Mind you Im not sure I fancy putting up the folding camper in a carpark....no sense of adventure eh!!

How did you find Les Erables, David? We used that site from when it first opened, about 2004 I think. But the last few times we found that especially motorhomes are being squeezed in and actually left after being told it was the only pitch available, as per my review on UKCS. Shame, as we used to enjoy staying there, but not if being like sardines! Also used Les Epinettes a few times now, at least they have properly defined pitches!
I have left a review of Fort du Lapin and want to reiterate how good it was in terms of access, cleanliness etc. We have used it 3 times.
Plus if you fancy a walk on the beach its just over the dunes though a gate in the back fence (very secure with a key code).
We did not use it this year because we arrived at Calais at 5pm on the day before our sailing and checked to see if we could get on an earlier boat. DFDS put us on the 6pm with no extra charge! So my review is not totally up to date.

I saw your comments in a previous post and looked at your reviews. I have to say I thought it a perfectly good overnight stop before your crossing (or after!) The pitches seemed quite clearly defined although some are close together. The ACSI DVD says there are 27 pitches when there are at least 50!!! I don't think it was half full the night we used it so the fitting them in that you refer was not an issue. Also at €13 a night including free WiFi it was good value. The facilities would not win any awards but they are perfectly functional and clean. The one disappointment was that we suffered from low cloud so did not get the view of England across the Channel!

We did look at the site last year on our way to the supermarket. I have been a little put off using it because it seems to be closed for some hours during the middle of the day and mention has been made of phoning ahead for the key code. Is that how its done?

Fair enough comment, David. We've been lots of times when it wasn't (nearly) full and it wasn't a problem. It's just that on one occasion when we were there, at about 9pm, another motorhome was put so close to us, that we could have shaken hands through the window. On another occasion a motorhome was put next to us, not as close as that, but closer than we'd like, and last year the pitch we were allocated was also very close to the next motorhome, hence our decision to leave and to go Les Epinettes. I must say that Bernard has always been very nice to us, in fact, he has in the past asked me to translate for him, but his wife doesn't appear quite as amenable.
We have never had a problem with access to Fort Lapin, though we do tend to arrive at sites about 5pm. Like a lot of sites they give you a code to open the entrance barrier. There was another code as I say that opened the gate to the dunes and beach. Sorry, I cannot say if you would need to book at the end of July as we have only been there in May and June. Nor do I know anything about phoning the site for a key code. As I say the Accueil has always been open when we arrived and they were friendly and welcoming.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
