Planning a trip next month for a few days, stayed in Bonneville near Chamonix ten years ago and longed to return ever since. No stranger to driving in Europe, 20+ times, just stuck on this area.

Just wondered if anyone has any recommendations where to head with good walking nearby as this is all last minute and can't decide where to aim! Happy to be within 3-20km of Chamonix.

The campsites in Chamonix are a little way out of town. The closest to the centre is Camping Les Barrats. A list of them can be found here: http://www.chamonix.net/english/accommodation/camping

Camping les Marmottes is fab.

We went a bit further round the Alps to Chatel, approach it via ThonoLess Bain and lLabondance valley......Chatel has one campsite....absolutely beautiful,even has a sauna ! There is a bus going up to the ski lifts every half hour, and they have bike racks in the bus...you can access the Porte de Soliel from here.

Gorgeous area for walking and mountain biking, very unspoilt phenominal views.

We stayed at Camping Les Iles at Sallanches last year. Superb lake beside site, warm and crystal clear for swimming. Short drive to Chamonix. Sallanches is a lovely town and has a fantastic market each Saturday. Uninterrupted views of monte Blanc. We loved it.
