I'd say you can get perfectly good sites, using either an ACSI Card or Camping Cheques for around 15 euros per night - some 12, some 14, and some 16 euros, and that includes electricity and there are lots of sites in Germany.
Peak season in France will often be more than £20 per night though this depends on the type of site and whether you need electricity, water etc. A pitch on a site with a wide range of facilities, entertainment, club, large pool etc with elec/water will often be over £30 per night particularly around coastal areas. The quieter sites can still be got for under £20 peak times, though less than they used to be, and the municipals still for considerably less.

If you add onto the F1 costs the fact that you will be unable to do any of your own cooking so will need to buy dinner plus hot drinks the pitch price doesn't seem quite so bad to me.

F1 (or other cheap hotels) are okay for stopovers so you're not getting so much from them - you'll alo have to add on breakfast. At a campsite your holiday has started: you have the surroundings &c ....
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!

Absolutely spot on. Hotel F1 and the like are functional soulless places that are perfect for overnight stops, but as they are generally situated on industrial estates, not where one would want to spend a holiday.
Comparing them with campsites, is like comparing them to five star hotels, is not the same thing at all.
£20 a night including hook up is pretty reasonable for a campsite. Obviously out of season, things are cheaper, the less facilities onsite, things are cheaper.
Top of the range park, high season and chuck a few kids into the mix and you are looking at £50 and upwards a night. But then, compared to a top of the range hotel with similar facilities, £50 a night for a family of 4 or 5 is cheap as chips.

Wow! Please guide me to these holes in the road! I'd use them like a shot, as they are presumably free!
I've had nothing but good experiences with F1's over the years .... they do exactly what it says on .... Clean room and bed, all identical ... arrive late at night, depart early next day ... and cheap ... perfect.
You can find some real bargain sites, if you don't want frills. We found a lovely municipal site at Martel in the Lot, for 8 euros per night - two euros each adult, two for the pitch, and two for electricity (and free WiFi). Same prices throughout the season. There are lots more, and you can find them on http://www.camping-municipal.org/ One of you could have a meal in the local restaurant and, including your campsite fees, you'd still have change from the price of a Formule 1.
Just to add some figures to my original mention of the ACSI Card, there are the following sites in Europe which charge just 12 euros per night for two adults, pitch for a tent or caravan, awning, and electricity:
Just back from France - eleven sites, none of them ACSI card sites, none of them Camping Cheque sites. All good, all clean, all full facilities, all with electric of course, some had pools, some had free wi fi, none of them needed booking. Average price 15 euros, say £13 a night .
That's been our experience too, 15 euro a night pretty much.
The other cost to be factored in is the toll fees. We usually spend about 150-200 euro on a 2 week trip. You don't have to use the motorways but we find it easier and faster to get around. I also do my share of driving which I wouldn't do if I had to drive around villages and towns -- too stressful for me!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
