Hi we have finally booked our ferry for the 3rd september, returning 14th September. We are planning to head to the core d'azur for 5 nights (overnight stop) heading back up to stop at ther ardeche for a few nights, then bald home. We haven't booked any sites and wondering whether people think we really need to? We quite like the idea of turning up where we want, then if we want tolerance either place earlier or stay longer we can, would this be possible ? How about the stops en-route, any problems just turning up at a municiple site? As we were just going to keep driving until we want to stop...
Cheers

No, you won't need to book, even in the hot-spots. There'll be plenty of space in September, and you can stay as long or as little time as you wish. We always holiday at that time (this time coming home on the 16th September) and in the last fifteen years have never booked a site, and have always found plenty of space. Indeed you may find that municipal sites are starting to close, and if they are open you may be the only unit there!
One year on a site in the Ardeche with 250 pitches, only ten were occupied. It won't be busy!!!!
Were going first two weeks in September as well. Have only booked the tunnel crossing to France and a hotel in Bruges for a couple of nights then the ferry back to Hull so I've only an hours drive home before back to work the following day.
We intend to follow the sun.
Last year we went last week August / first week Sept - the site on the Ile de Re we were on went from being full to half full more or less overnight on the middle weekend. Like Val, we've stayed on Municipals in Sept and been one of a handful.
I have been on popular ACSI Sites and chatted to owners who say they have never ever been completely full. As everyone says - September is a quiet month. We once stayed on a municipal where we were the only 'van and when it closed in mid September the warden told us to stay put and he would leave one loo and one shower and the water heater on. No charge and stay as long as you like.
Surprisingly we didn't stay till spring.
