We had problems years ago but haven't had any recently. I think the problem might be a combination of old pumps and old cards.
However, my OH is still paranoid it will happen again and we fill up when we can.
Remember that supermarket pumps are not usually manned on Sundays and that small local garages might only open on Sunday mornings, if at all. The kiosk on motorway pumps might sometimes be closed but you can usually pay a cashier inside the services shop.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We have had problems in the past but not for at least the last five years.
However, we have several times recently found that the Esso garage immediately outside the port at Cherbourg will not accept Visa but it will accept Mastercard

As I said earlier we had a few problems last year but it tended to be at older, smaller supermarkets. It did not seem to matter whether it was VISA or Master Card. I suspect the problem is that the older machines perhaps don't connect very well to the authorisation service, especially with an overseas card. I don't recall ever having a problem in France at a staffed cash desk, only pay at pump.
