If you have a BT landline at home then check out BT Smart Talk. This app would enable you to make calls over wifi using your landline. Similar to Skype but possibly even cheaper!

A second vote for the BT Smart-Talk app, we have it on android devices, even a nexus 7 can be used as a telephone. The calls are the same rate as your BT calling plan so if you are on unlimited anytime plan you get the same function via WIFI connection. Cant guarantee this in all countries but works well in UK and the Western European Countries we visited.

havent a smart phone as I'm not smart enough and our phone is a cheapy nokia as we hardly use it, although what 16-18 yr old girls talk about ALL the time befudddles me.

Skype no good as my Mum is so .........."oh this is so complicated". Will only use the phone for emergencies and the occasional call home and texting to and fro...

Is the house still there/broken into/no mail/is the weather crap......

Will probably stick withthe phone I have and switch the roaming do da off!

When I had to check in regularly with aged parents, from abroad, I would send a text to say okay to phone and then they would phone me for about 10 mins max most evenings. I had a simple pay as you go phone (still do!) which I topped up before we went, and the 70p or so a day it cost was money well spent for their reassurance.

I shall be using my EE phone - contract on 4G included free calls while anywhere in europe. Data - I will be using McDonalds or other free wifi or possible EE if I can get a good deal on roaming data. It is always worth checking with your provider near the holiday season, as they sometimes have offers which they don't promote much.
