Hi All

I am trying to book a campsite in France but i want to do a bit of shore fishing. I don’t know the rules in France. Is it the same as over here basically if its tidal its free (no rod licence).

I have searched the forum but found nothing relating to sea/ shore fishing.

Thanks

You can fish from the shore and from the breakwaters at Grau d'Agde and quite a lot of other places along the Western Mediterranean.  You can also forage for shellfish.  Years ago my two small sons and I caught 42 mackerel with a cheap cane rod each, baited with little whitebait type fish!  We were at Argeles at the time and we shared our catch with anyone on the campsite who wanted some fish.  The French 'professionals' with all their equipment were very amused to see us keep catching!

I don't know if the same applies to all coastal waters in France.

River fishing is a bit different, and at some campsites you need a temporary (visitors permit) to fish - but at others no permits are required.

I should add that we've been camping/caravanning in France for thirty three years - since our eldest son was just a baby, and we still go back every year.  Both our sons now camp in France, too, which is a good recommendation for French camping as an ideal family holiday.

No licence is required but there are minimum sizes/weights/quantities per species,i.e, Bass (bar ) is now 42cm.
