Hi all,
I am looking for a lovely campsite in South or Western France with pool, suitable for young children, with direct beach access.. We have our own rather large tent. Quite like the option of private facilities that I've read about on some sites, but not a necessity. Any suggestions? We will be going end of July, I realise many will be booked up! x

Camping Interlude on the ile De Re is great for young families and has beach access and a pool - The cycle routes that cross the entire island are safe with youngsters either on their own bikes or trailers / tagalongs.
Would highly highly recommend Les Sablons at Portiragnes Plage, but i very much doubt you will find anywhere on the med cost for that time of year that will have direct beach access. They all seem to book up really quickly. Good luck though.

No pool but we love Camping Indigo on Noirmoutier. I have 2 boys (aged 4&7) and we have never needed a pool as the beach is so lovely. Site is in a wooded area a few steps from the beach. Safe bike riding throughout the island - BLISS
Direct beach access at Parc de la cote Sauvage, near Royan, and Le Suroit and Les Gros Joncs on the Ile d'Oleron. Camping Nauzan Plage is not on the beach, but within easy walking distance, as are a few in that area of Royan/St Palais.

Hi,

The campsite can get a little "Middle England" at times but if the weather is kind there is nowhere quite like the Ile De Re.

Been to Interlude four times now and more than likely will go for a fifth time this year.
The free bus from the campsite into the village (and back) is great for visiting the market - and handy having two big supermarkets only ten minutes drive away.
Crossing the bridge seems to cross a couple of climate zones
One more and another
We've stayed at the latter, and literally walked twenty metres from our tent to the beach.
Ile de Re, as mentioned by OP has wonderful cycling for all ages (absolutely flat), lovely fishing villages with superb restaurants, great beaches, it's own microclimate that's excellent and compares well to areas much further south.
La Rochelle isn't far and makes a good trip for a day's outing and some superlative ice cream shops!

we spent 16 nights at Domaine la yole,Valras plage with our touring caravan last August. We had a great time with lovely weather and a brilliant pitch as you can choose which one you want if available via google earth.
The beach is only 200 yards away with lovely soft sand, the site was great for our son aged 12 and our Daughter aged 16.
Great nightly entertainment and the swimming pools and slide were fab. The toilet facilities were always clean even at busy times of the days. If i remember it cost about £650. The site is very big but not to busy and we felt secure as security always walking around.
Thanks all. Head spinning from all these wonderful choices… :) I think it's between Noirmountier or Il deRe. We have our own tent, but I am sorely tempted now to rent a mobile home and have our own facilities!
I really wouldn't spend too much longer making up your mind. Beachside sites are very popular. Accommodation and pitches may well be booked at the end of one season, for the next season. Don't be downhearted if you try several campsites and don't find availability - but ask if they can keep you on a 'reserve' list for contact in case of cancellations.
Whilst there is absolutely no problem not booking in advance during April/May/June early July or late August/September/October, and sites will almost always have pitches (even if no availability in mobiles, unfortunately late July on a beachside site is a time when you need to get organised in advance and book early.
If the worst comes to the worst and you can't find availability on any of the sites suggested, then just go to France, take your tent, and choose inland sites within driving distance of the sea. My friends are teachers and always holiday in late July/August, taking their own tent, and have had no problems, but they don't mind rural, or in out of the way areas.
By the way, in response to your question about private bathrooms, here's an old thread on that subject. We've just booked a pitch at Champs Blancs on the Mediterranean (though not beachside) with a private bathroom, using Camping Cheques at no extra cost. Unfortunately this isn't the case in July - when you'll have to pay extra.
Perhaps a tip for next year is to think about holidaying during the last two weeks in August, when sites in France become less busy and you can turn up without booking even on most sites, even those with direct beach access.
Camping Bois Soleil in Saint Georges De Didonne (a few km round the coast from Royan) http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=6568 has direct access and is a nice (and big) site. The aerial picture on their website shows how good the beach access is. Just ask for a pitch that isn't sandy (loads of ants on the sandy ones!)
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
