I looking to book a ferry to Calais and don't know wether to book morning ferry which means stopping over night at the service area by Maidstone which looks like £ 29 a night or to get a night ferry which gets there around 11 pm and stay on the docks. Can anyone tell me which is the best .

I presume you arrive in Dover/Dover area late in the evening like us? In that case I would cross late at night and stay on the French side. You can stay on the docks, or stay at Aire des Deux Caps which is a few miles away towards Boulogne, or you may even be lucky, like us! We had an evening ferry booked, but actually made really good time on the trip to Dover and got a ferry at 3.15 pm. That gave us plenty of time to get to a site for the night!
Thanks I do not think I will get to dover before 8pm so if we did book a site we would not get there till midnight and I thought that would be to late to get on .

Hi Campingbart - not sure if you are a camper van or caravaner?
We have a motorhome and tend to book a tunnel in the late evening (if we make good time to the port we normally get put on an earlier one) and stay either at the docks or city europe car park. cite europe is free and the aire at the docks about 10 euros -

Yes, on the last couple of occasions we have stayed at Citie europe there were 1 or 2 caravans with steadies down but still hitched. (tucked away behind the motorhomes) and no-one seemed to bother them.
