In the scenario that the caravan had a problem, and had to be left at the roadside, because it was not 'towable' then you would need to leave a warning triangle as an indication that traffic should take care. You then STILL require a warning triangle in the car, after you've driven away, in case you should then have a further breakdown in the car.

The OP asked how many he needed to carry - not how many were compulsory. I answered as I did because I'd read the AA and other recommendations, and as he has a caravan it is recommended that he carry an additional one for the caravan.
In some other countries, such as Italy and Spain it's compulsory to carry two - so if you're likely to stray over the border, ever, then it makes sense to have two as standard.
