We are travelling to St Aygulf next week from Roscoff and are hoping to get to Clermont-Ferrand possibly onto the E70 as far as Thiers. Can anyone recommend a stopover very close to the road that we can arrive at approx 9.30pm? We normally stop 30 mins past Clermont-Ferrand going on the Milau route, as we normally head towards Aigues Mortes or Perpignon but this time Michelin tells us to turn off toward Lyon!

I'm not good with roads but this is near CF and was an easy quick hop of the motorway. The owners Dutch , you could phone and ask about a late arrival as the night we were there he was in the bar and therefore when you arrive you could hopefully just go to the bar and he would sort you out.

What day of the week are you travelling? It is further following the Millau/Montpelier route but it might be worth avoiding Lyon and the A7 on a weekend. You would rejoin the Lyon route at Salon de Provence.

It is the route we've taken from Clermont in the past, though our preferred route would be the N102.

Plus the A75 (Millau route) is free except for the viaduct.

We are overnight from Plymouth to Roscoff on Friday so will be travelling Sat. We want to get as far as poss on shortest possible route as have a 9 and 7 year old, and will have to make minimal stops to swap drivers just to make Clermont I think. Would be nice to have an easier drive on day 2.

You've chosen the longest journey (almost) that can be made in France on a summer weekend with two kids. Bon Courage as the french would say.

I would go to the campsite you've used before, carry on to Montpelier on the Sunday and on to your destination. It would be less stressful.

I doubt it will be 15 miles further than the Lyon route on a total of 875 miles, it is not worth thinking about..

We stayed here once on the way home. Nice site by a river that is not far from the main route. It is just South of Clermont Ferrand

Thanks everyone, I think it will take us 12 hours to clermont as we are towing and will need some fuel/food breaks! Our usual campsite is in Aubrac (I think) so quite a bit further than Clermont. But it is open till 10pm and straight off the motorway, I will make a note of all your suggestions, and see how we get on! If we need to stop earlier at Clermont or before, we will probably do the Lyon direction, as Michelin says it take 1hr 30 less! But if we can keep going will stick to the route we know.

Aubrac is two hours past Clermont, minimum. But it will be two hours less on the second day.
