I give up. I thought we'd found a good site on the beach, says its quiet etc. walks, woods, brilliant. Municipal L'Orgatte. (1 bad review on here)
Found some french reviews... terrible. So started looking again. nearly every site looks like they are mainly for statics/holiday homes. does anyone know of a nice quiet site near St Jean de Monts or Notre Dame de Monts area that takes touring caravans on the coast that has clean facilities, takes dogs and is quiet.. Jun/July period (2015) 2 star is good Not bothered about entertainment/pool etc.

Alan, you say June or July 2015, but which? The timing makes a huge difference.
In June you will find the campsites down that coast deserted and you 'll be able to go and look and choose any one of them which you like the look of, but the cafés, bars, restaurants and many of the shops will be shut and the place will be pretty somnolent. If on the other hand you take an instant dislike to St Jean de Monts as we did - a tacky place on an unpretty coast we thought - then you can move on.
In July it all becomes a different world when families arrive and the holiday season begins and the camp sites fill up.
It certainly isn't as tacky as most of our seaside resorts and definitely not as tacky as the vast majority of Mediterranean resorts. As for unpretty, it is a resort with hotels along the prom but it is a world away from our resorts and med resorts.
There are vast flat golden sands and dunes. The Vendee isn't as interesting an area as some other destinations in France.

a lot of people get st jeans de monts confused with orouet (which is a suburb of st jeans) orouet IS tacky, whereas st jeans is a reminiscent of Llandudno, but only in that the sea front consists of hotels and restaurants etc.
the beaches are wide and sandy, plenty of room for all!
I do agree with Berriow on one issue, that of timing! mid to late Jul into mid august is very busy, june into july is pretty quiet other than weekends.
we have a static on Le Ragis, challans, which has at last started to get back to what it was. the owners have now enclosed one of the pools and tarmacked all the roads. as I type this I can say that there are very few pitches free, in fact its the busiest I have seen it for about 5 years.
there is a little municipal site in soullans, which might fit your needs, very basic though clean, flat pitches last time I took a look. its in a small village with a few shops, restaurants etc, and from there you can access all the areas you can from st jeans
we have taken a particular liking to sion sur l'ocean, there is also a campsite there which takes tourers and is right on the beach (I have seen campervans on there, they may take tourers???) its surrounded by forests with lots of walks etc. it might be worth sounding out?
back to st jeans de monts, there are loads of sites on the road out towards normoutier, mainly French, but there are at least 30, some small, some large, even if you didn't book for june you would find somewhere open!!
I think from what I can tell on streetview that you have probably summed it up correctly, but I hope perhaps a better classs of tackiness than say Skeggy and with a bit more sun maybe?
Sounds like we might stand a chance of avoiding the gangs of younguns in June and July. We should be staying for over 3 weeks so probably last week in June first 2/3 in July.
Maybe we should make a list of a few possibles and head on to the first and have a reccy and so on see what happens.
The OH she hates not booking it makes her feel insecure... so will have to play it by ear..
Having a destination in a satnav is handy for st jean de monts. Its flat and there's loads of roundabouts that all look alike. We have been to siblu there twice at the whit holidays. The first time was reasonably busy but not overly so. The second time apart from one weekend was very, quiet.
We have been to fantasy island ingoldmells while we were in Lincolnshire this summer. Although the kids thought it was fantastic, the wife, the dog and I, thought it was hell on earth. Scarborough was nicer but teeming with people. St Jean de monts is nicer IMHO.

Our neighbours went to Camping des Ecureils for 4 years running. We stayed some way away at Ferme du Latois, but stumbled across it on our travels. Look very pleasant from the outside and the next door beach has wonderful sand. Perhaps worth a google.
We have just returned from 2 weeks in St Jean. I wouldn't recommend the area at all, we were very disappointed.
Rubbish site, rubbish weather, very expensive and found the area just very boring. Would never go back.
We stayed at La Garangoire in the Vendee. A lovely small Castels site about half an hour inland from the coast so you can avoid sleeping in the 'lively' part of town.

St Gilles Croix de Vie is just down the coast from St Jean de Monts & in my opinion it is a much prettier town. St Gilles is in 2 parts;St Gilles & Croix de Vie are divided by the river Vie. There is an old part to the town, a pretty harbour with lots of boats, 3 promenades & bags of character about the place. Have a good holiday!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
