I never break wind in France, I sometimes break wind in The UK but on the rare occasions I do I blame the dogs - I use the wind breaks to obscure the dogs' view to stop them "greeting" everyone who walks past.
Having seen the photo's above I might start breaking wind when cooking outside but only a safe distance from any naked flames.

This year we used a tiny wee 2 panel windbreak and noticed that Dutch, Germans and Swiss were using windbreaks too.
My breezeblocker is only waist height and we use it with our tarp. We can still be sociable but also private and it prevented football's from the pitch opposite hitting our table. It meant we had an extra room.
I was on a beach site in Brittany where the pitches weren't clearly marked and there were whole areas of the site fenced off with windbreaks by French campers!

We've just got back from a VERY breezy (but lovely) Normandy so the windbreak was a total necessity if we wanted to be able to do any meaningful cooking...this was as well as sheltered hedging!
I try to avoid them if at all possible and dread pitching up next to a large group who are fully wind-breaked together (which never really happens in France luckily).
We tend not to use a wind break in France, although we did last year in Annecy, as the itches in Le Solitaire were tiny and tere was littel privac. The people next to us used tojust star over from the elevated position of their caravan nd I wanted to sunbathe with no top on!!!!
Pitches are generally very spacious and have clear divisions with hedgreows.
If we are using just one tent and we happen to be in an exposed poition say near the facilities blck we would use it.
But in general we don't use one. My OH goes mad because I always pack one just in case. I say one beacuse we ahve a green one for the green tent and a mocha one for the beige/ black tents And everything MUST match.

I don't feel I'm being anti-social if we use our windshield in France. While privacy is never total when camping I like to lounge, sit & eat with my family in relative privacy. Also the breeze can get up even in the south of France. Judging by the level of 'socialising' I've witnessed I'm not too bothered about being considered anti-social anyway. Walking around the site folk generally are behind their cars or in awnings to a large extent.
We have one, we always take it, almost never put it up. We've occasionally needed to cook behind or to mark out the edge of the pitch. I can't imaging ever wanting to put it across the front of my tent somehow.
And in the UK ... well... umm... the wind always blows it down. More bother than it's worth, tbh.
